Using bed-length cargo net as a hammock

Has anyone tried this, or does anyone think this could work as an alternative to sleeping on the bed itself? I've seen it cited that the bed-rail "cleats" can hold 200lbs each, so I'm thinking that with weight distributed over the entire "net" and all 4 cleats (or hell, 6 would even better), it should easily support a 250lb sleeping dude, right?

I'm looking for an easy, quick-to-set-up and easy-to-stow-away alternate to setting up a tent, inflating an air mattress, finding two trees to hang an actual hammock, sleeping in the cab, etc, when I just need to crash out for a few hours or one night and the weather isn't an issue.

Thoughts?

 

Not a bad idea. Try it and let me know haha. For me it's easier to find a couple of trees, but I never unexpectedly need a nap. It's always intentional. Be a cool little trick if it did work tho, other than your feet hanging over in a short bed. Might keep the wind off your back as well.

 

Definitely strong enough if the net is comparable to the OEM 2nd gen bed net.

With some sewing time, you could certainly make your own in a similar design with good, mil spec nylon and proper stitching.

Would probably work great.

The plastic movable ones? Um no. 70lbs I believe is what the warning tag says on them.

Get the total chaos bed stiffeners or a bed rack. Tie one end of hammock to tree other to truck that's what I do.

I feel like those nets would stretch too much and the rails can't hold the weight.

Or get someone to make you those hammock supports for under your wheels

Yeah, I hear ya. I'm not a narcoleptic. haha There've been times in the past while driving Out West (Kentucky to Yosemite or Yellowstone) that I've stopped late at night to sleep, didn't want to pay for a hotel and didn't want to drag all my gear out, so I ended up reclining the driver's seat and snoozing for a few hours, or climbing into the cargo area of my JGC. I'm just curious if one of these nets could be adapted to serve an additional bonus purpose, but it's a moot point if those anchors won't hold.

I can't sew, but I know someone who can - I wonder if a large surplus piece of old Army-issue cotton-duck would hold with grommets and rope/cable sewn into the corners? Just thinking out loud.

 

It seems like it would hurt with all the pressure points.

 

One day if/when I buy a bed rack, I will definitely try this - that would get me way up off the bed and off any cargo that's back there. That's what meant by "dual purpose" - the net to secure small items in the bed while driving then just detach it, lift it higher up and reattach it to the bed rack for sleeping.
