Bent fuel door

...missed opportunity to plug "The Gashole"?

Looks like someone tried to close it before putting the fuel cap back on.

 

Not that it'll make your door out of alignment, but in the second pic I see you're missing one of the little rubber grommet stoppers

 

Whoa. Just checked mine and it's missing as well. My stupid compulsiveness is now battling my laziness. Do I really want to try to find that part #?

 

Holy cow mine are missing too, could this missing part cause us to push the door in to far ?

 

These doors and hinges are very thin metal (on all vehicles). It's just like adjusting a door in your house that doesn't shut properly. Figure out which way it needs to move and tweak the hinges a little. I've done this on dozens of vehicles through the years.

Pretty easy to see where yours needs adjusting. Make the bottom hinge look like the top one and start there.

 

They pop out pretty easily, mine came out while I was washing the truck and

They pop out pretty easy, mine came out just from running my wash mitt over that area while washing my truck. Luckily I noticed when I was wiping down and found them lying in my driveway!!
The door goes in farther without them but probably not enough to bend the hinge.
I'm sure toyota dealers would stock these, probably same piece on every vehicle

 

Use a piece of wood and hammer and gently tap at the bottom of the door bracket a little at a time,until the door fits perfectly again,why go too the dealer and wait ALL day for something simple.And yes I fixed mine that way.

 

I'm having the same issue with mine, took it to the dealer and they said they can't bend it out and would have to replace it for $240..

Any tips on how to fix this myself? Essentially the top right corner is rubbing.

You need to carefully try and bend the hinge back into its original shape. It is likely bent out from the bottom right corner and causing the rubbing issue on your paint. Try bending a little at a time trying to see what works best. I have done this on my old 1st gen and it worked pretty good. It is going to be tough to get it perfect. Touch up the area that was rubbing or it will start to rust.

The gas doors on these trucks are a joke, terrible design that hasn't been addressed in over 20 years. (Subaru has this garbage design as well) I see numerous 1st and 2nd gens on the road with missing doors altogether. Make sure you keep your hinge lubed up real good especially if you are in the salt belt.

 

Lots of theories here. It is possible you may never know how the fuel door came to be in this condition.....

This is an issue of a little lubrication goes a long way. These hinges need to be regularly lubricated or else they will easily bend. White Lithium Grease will last the longest.

 

So, you think that someone maliciously messed with your gas door? I hate that our gas door is not lockable, I would preferred opening it from the inside of the cabin. I wish there was a company that sells a kit to solved this issue.

 

Mine was bent and rubbing for a couple of months. Tried bending it to no avail. Now the stress fatigued it enough that the hinge just broke today. What a piece of crap.
