    Hi Guys/Gals,

In my enthusiastic rush to get my Mobtown Sliders on it didn't occur to me that I would need to prime before applying the bedliner spay to them.

    Now they look...well you'll see.

What's the best way I can go about fixing these without removing them?

    TIA!!!

Are they welded on, or bolted on? I'm going to guess welded...

If welded on, I'd sand them down (carefully around the truck) and use a paint on primer and paint on paint. I am actually not a fan of bed liner on stuff because I've seen it cause rust issues with trapped moisture. Much easier to use paint and touch up.

Thanks! I wasn't sure if just sanding everything down would work with bedliner. Is it the coarser the better?

Do you have an angle grinder? If so, a floppy wheel will be your friend. If you are doing it by hand, I dont think I'd use a very coarse grit - I'd probably wetsand with a finer grit. Even with the floppy, I'd try to get a finer grit. It's much better to start off with a fine grit and then realize you should use a coarse grit than the other way around.

Wire wheel, then rust converter, top with rust encapsulator or more bedliner. I would not put the effort in trying to make it pretty. You are in wack a mole mode, the rust will expand.

I used the Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer on my trailer, paint seems to have good adhesion. You need to give it a lot of cure time for best results. I did two coats of the primer.

If they're bolt on, as much as it sucks, I'd remove them and refinish them off of the truck. It's not worth the potential of rust spreading to your frame rails. Don't fix your rushing and lack of prep with more rushing.

Glad to see that someone else gets similar mileage. Always amazed at people reporting better than 20 mpg.

This. If you can remove them, for yours and your truck's safety, it's best to remove them and and prepare/paint them correctly. Make the layer's beefy to fight the rust that you've already allowed to happen.

That's great to know I can use the angle grinder, the thought never crossed my mind...I'll check out some flap disks. Has any one used these? https://www.lowes.com/pd/3M-Paint-a...xRc2OzM8BZD0PzJQmYAuGFL65_LXfXvkaAltSEALw_wcB

I washed them down, dried them then sanded them...so probably not.

Harbor freight will be your freind here. Their wheels and stuff are quite a bit cheaper than those at lowes.

Personally, I dont like any of the drill based attachments because you cant apply much pressure. With an angle grinder you can apply a lot of pressure or just let it rest. If you dont have one, the harbor freight angle grinders are great.

Didnt see it mentioned anywhere but you NEED to wear gloves, glasses and a mask. You do not want that stuff getting your lungs, or causing blindness. It goes everywhere. Wear leather gloves for “oh crap” moments, because the angle grinder will probably bounce on you a few times if you arent used to doing it

I love harbor freight!! That is where I bought my angle grinder...only used it a few times so far. I am more worried about hitting the truck with the grinder. Is there a heavy duty drop cloth or something I can lay over the top of the sliders just in case?

you could probably put several drop cloths (not the plastic type) between the door and sill, and close the door on it to keep it in place. Wrap it under the truck to the other side and close the door on it over there. Would help keep it out of the way. I would strongly encourage rinsing the truck off several times during this process as the rust/bedliner mix will spray everywhere and you dont want to risk that adhering or staining your truck.
