May not be worth my time unless it gets worse

    Thanks though

I've been monitoring my '16 SR's hood for any indications of separation, some of the adhesive looks a little suspect but so far I hadn't seen any movement from the hood that wasn't legitimately "normal" (slight wobble over bumps if you are staring at it)

I took it through a car wash today out of desperation b/c it was once again covered in bugs and bird droppings and dust... for some reason no one in Scottsdale has heard of a touchless car wash?!?!??? ... ANYWAYS, this wash was fierce enough with its noodles to push my side view mirrors all around, and the air dryer on the exit was like sitting in jet wash. In that moment you could see the hood ripple like a sonofabitch. Was quite alarming, but no actual damage appears to have been done.

Made me think though, are we seeing separations from continuous overzealous car wash (air dryer) cycles maybe?

I just wanted to say thank you for the fix. I just did mine today. I was driving down the road and my driver's side started fluttering like mad. My pictures echo yours.

I am going to leave mine black though as I have the MGM.

Did it come painted from the factory? Does it match?

This is partially done in the pictures. Instead of multiple trips to dealer and spending time waiting for a fix, new hood or repaint, I decided to fix it myself with some clear silicone I had in my garage and applied it around all bracing with a caulking gun. Went over it a couple of times to fill all of the gaps. It’s good for over 400 degrees of heat.

Other Taco owners have done this.

It dries clear. About $5.00 for a Tube at HD or Lowe’s.

Keep your original paint and no worries about bulging your hood by using foam.
No more flutter and easy to do yourself.

I used Sonneborn np1 polyurethane adhesive and reinforced the factory glued spots after I saw the hood vibrate at a touch less car wash during the dry cycle.

We use the stuff at work and it stays flexible even after 10 years. It didn't cause any sheet metal deformation during minus 10 degrees winter temps or summer heat due to different thermal expansion coefficients.

It's paintable so I painted it with touch up paint so it blends in. I had white on hand but you can get it in multiple colors. They even have an orange that might not of needed painting with my inferno orange color.

It's sticky so I masked before I applied. Cleans with solvent base wax and grease removers. Supposedo to wait several days before painting, I just waited a week.

Hello, noticed some of my glue separating after a local Tacoma meet and greet. Went to the dealer where I bought my truck last Friday. Today they wanted me to send them a few pictures of the inside of the hood where the old adhesive has separated. Just got off the phone with the dealer, they want me to bring it in on Tuesday so their body shop can fix it. I will let you know when I get it back how good the repair job they did. Dealer is Tempe AutoNation Toyota.

Checked under the hood today, the stock adhesive is separated in multiple spots.

Not sure if I want to go self fix or dealer.
They couldn't even fix my driver door speaker rattle and didn't even get the plastic pins to push in getting it back together
Let alone having their body shop fix it...

I spoke with an Auto Audio installer yesterday about upgrading my sound system. One thing he told me about the new 3rd Gen Tacomas was you have to be real careful removing the inside door panels. Apparently when you remove the panels, you not only have to pull out but also at some weird angle. My guess @Garrett75x, was whoever removed your panel didn't know that any broke a few pins off. I hear that happens quiet a bit with these new gen models.

Would appreciate an update as to how well this fix (silicone) has help up over time. Did it completely fix the vibration issue?

Yes, it completely fixed the vibration/fluttering of the outer skin of the hood.

The silicone is still holding tight.

Pictures were taken before job of filling seams with silicone was finished. I went back over it and made sure to fill the gaps I had left.
Of course it dries to clear. 03D53168-D2BC-4B1B-8B20-57F932ED1910.jpg 59E99762-1A81-44DD-9C11-94CFB1E2D50F.jpg

So I've had the dealership fix my hood. Been a few weeks now and even been out in the desert too. No more fluttering. The dealership did call me back the day they had my truck and asked if they could use some different adhesive that wasn't the same color as before, I told them to go ahead and use whatever they had. No one really cares what color my glue is under my hood anyways. LOL.

The hood flutter was a known issue for the Silverado & Sierra trucks and there is a TSB that GM put out for the hoods to be reglued if the sealent has failed. My best friends nephew owns a body shop and has repaired a number of Silverados and Sierras as well as a few Colorados & Canyons for the hood flutter. He is a go to body shop for dealers that don't have their own. He just reglued hoods on 2 Honda Ridgelines with the same problem. He told me this isn't a manufacturer specific problem but how they are building vehicle now a days with the thinner metal / aluminum hoods with smaller skeletons under the skin, all in the name of saving weight, so there is a lot of movement from wind, carwashes etc. which will depond the glue. Why does it happen to some vehicles and not others he did not have an answer other than to say why do some things fail on some new cars and not others, same sort of thing.

Same question, is there a TSB for this, and if so, what years does it cover?

No TSB. I just fixed mine myself a few weeks ago with the 3M NVH. Dealer offered to replace the hood but I didn't wanna deal with the respray and it would just have the same issue. There has been no change in hood production.
