Not new thread. But,made a mistake on access cab. Should have got dc. Damn- son wants football,baseball,3D archery/hunting in fall. He’s 13. Just me and him,but pickup his friends and all. Go camping ect. Had no interest but baseball. Now no room. Have 6 foot bed. Dealer wants 5100 to offset depreciation and start over. But the access cab was annoying me to open driver and passenger to than open access. Pain (you know where). Any ideas ? Workaround. A tonneau to hide things under. Don’t know. His friends are 14 and most 6’4 260. Can’t do it. I didn’t think it was going to go this way. Anybody?

Unfortunately moving from cars in year one will almost always be a finical hit. Can you handle the hit? Is 5100 worth it to you? Or is that much worth just telling your sons friends to get their own ride. Double cabs are great and hold value a bit better as well but only you can decide if financially its worth it for you

$5100 is a LOT to loose but if it bothers you now it will only get worse. Adding a camper or cover will only put you deeper in the hole. I’d start with not picking up his friends- their parents can bring them! Good luck with your decision.

    Simple.

Explain to son that you aren't going to spend $5k to become a taxi for his buds. I mean you are the adult here. Right? Which means you're still in charge.

Removal of the rear seats and conversion to cargo area will make a nice storage place for his gear, locked and dry, at a marginal cost. Several threads around here on similar conversions for dogs, gear, etc.

Or you could buy a lockable topper to secure the gear and allow for a foundation for camping.

EDIT: For those who may think I'm being 'cheap' with my suggestion........

    Keep in mind the following.

What happens when kid and BFFs have a tiff over a chick, and don't want to associate any more?

When the kid decides he doesn't want to do that sport (whichever) anymore because, well, because whatever? He's 13. Minds change faster than socks.

If the truck is financed for a typical 5 yrs, the kid will be old enough to shuffle himself before the truck is paid off. Do you prefer to have said kid hauling a bunch of kids around, or limited in space (and thus risk)?

But still, you're the adult. No kid should be telling you to spend $5k to be his buds uber, especially if you bought what you wanted to fill your need.

What do they sell for on the private market? Trading in is rarely the best idea. Also, try a different dealership. I traded a 2015 Sierra Crew cab z71 for my Taco, one dealership wanted me to add 5k to the deal and another did it for 1k. I went in knowing what I wanted, and told them I did not want to test drive, or waste time - make this deal or I walk. They will do a lot if they know you will sign papers and wont budge.

Doubt a DC will help much hauling around an offensive line. You may want to look at a full size or a Tahoe.

Sounds like you should have bought a 4Runner.

You're going to need a Tundra crewcab if his friends are that big. The Tacoma double cab just doesn't have the rear leg room like you're going to need. You may have to trade down a year or two, the Tundras hold their value really well also.

When I was young my Dad loaded my friends and I into his smaller truck and we didn't complain... If you really want the extra room for him and his friends though, I would skip the DC Tacoma and do either a 4runner or a Tundra.

    It's Tundra time, OP.

Might I suggest posting the truck for sale across state lines? A v6 4x4 access cab is impossible to find in my neck of the woods.

As others have said, moving to a DC most likely will not give you the room you're looking for. My passengers (tall) put the front passenger seat all the way back to sit comfortably and doing so gives like...4" of leg room in the back lol.

8 months in sr5 ac 6foot bed,6cyl. Access cab killing me. Me and 14 yr old son. Didn’t think I needed the room, was baseball only. Now football,archery/hunting. Camping. Wants his friends along. Most of his friends are 6 feet and over. No room. Usually I’m ahead of an issue. Caught off guard with this. Went to dealer he wants 5200 to offset depreciation and start new with something else. Can’t go backwards. Any ideas - no wise cracks. Would you put tonneau on bed to put all the gear under to hide it. Problem is people room. Dammit. I’m 6’3. The 2 of us up front ok. The acces cab killing me. What a mistake. Love the truck, should have known better. This kid now wants to do everything under the sun with his buddies. Can’t fit them. Ideas ? Be serious.

Dude you only have two choices if you need people room.
    1. Take the hit and trade for new (or sell outright for a slightly less hit)
    2. Trade even for a older used truck

BTW it's not so much depreciation, it's price difference between access and double cabs.

Actually, from what you are saying, you need a minivan or an 11 passenger van.

Double cab room is pretty shitty as well. It sounds like you need a full size

Should be able to trade for a 2016. The price difference between an AC and a DC isn't $5,000.

An AC is only $1,000 more for a DC. And a manual DC is cheaper than an auto AC. At least in the Southeast.
