Anyone do any fishing in the Pamlico river or Albemarle sound? Thinking with the long weekend might try camping somewhere or doing a day trip kayak fishing. Mostly want to target flounder. Might just drive to OI again for surf fishing and camp at the camp ground. :notsure:

I've fished that area but only for stripers. It's been a while since I've been though.

I don't even know if the doormats have moved in there yet. It's a killer place to hook up on stripers.

Talked with my buddy we are going to surf fish Emerald Isle Saturday evening and half the day Sunday. Looks like mullet, croaker and blues are still around there in decent numbers.

Need some help... This is a design I came up with but looking for input. I apologize in advance, I cant draw.

I have a cheap harbor freight cargo carrier ($29.99 black friday sale) I am going to put rod holders on it for transportation. I was considering welding pipe to it and using a pvc liner, but I think using straight pvc would be cheaper.

    I have two main questions,

Should I make a bracket like my design? Or would a u-bolt hold it tight enough?

U-bolt would be easiest for sure. I would have to caddy corner them so the back bracket goes across the carrier which I don't think would be a big issue. I would cut notches out of the pvc for the reel and tie them down with bungees.

    I bolts? u-bolt? lol

I was going to use nylon nuts on the back of the u-bolts. Since there are two cross bars I would probably use two u-bolts per each rod holder. Paint everything black to match and get some reflective tape for the carrier. I think I can get everything for under or around $30. Significantly cheaper than any aluminum or steel holder. With this it allows me to carry an extra cooler on the back too!

Go further south, it would be worth the extra 30-40min. Might have to work half a day Saturday but I’ll be going down afterwards. It’s been phenomenal the past 2 days, today and tomorrow shouldn’t be any different. 96lb cobia caught off the beach and multiple more 30lb+ were caught as well. Avon Pier got 10+ yesterday last I heard.

What are some less crowded beaches to fish? I want to fish overnight / nap in the tent. Would I have to get all the way to orocacoke for that? I just want to be able to leave a line out without crosses others if I pass out

Not allowed to have vehicles on the beach overnight now. Gotta be off by 9. The only way to fish overnight on the beach is to drop off your stuff, park at the access and drive to where your stuff is. Not worth it unless you fish ramp 55 where the walk is only about 100-200yrds and it’s a good night spot. And you’re not allowed to camp out on the beach either, it states in the rules when you get the driving permit “camping allowed at designated sites only”. But, if you do, and I have, it’s best to have another person with you that’s awake so the rangers don’t give you crap.

Fished in a local kayak tournament in St. Pete, FL today in memory of a fallen soldier. Aside from the tropical storm heading our way, the weather held up well until we got back to land. I ended up wining the trout part of the tournament with my barely legal trout lol

I ended up meeting up with a buddy of mine and we hit the point at Emerald Isle early Sunday morning. Caught a few bluefish on gotcha's, my buddy hooked into something big fishing cut mullet. He fought it for a minute or so then the line broke. I think it was a blue that sliced the line. The line was cleanly sliced so something with teeth. As the tide started to change, I couldn't get 14 oz of weight to stick so we ended up throwing heavy jigs but were unsuccessful.

On a side note, I traded those offshore rods for a shimano tld 10 (fantastic shape) and a shimano talavera 6'6 rod. It's a sweet set up! So I'm $80 deep for that setup and two penn 330's, not bad if I must say so myself!

Worked really well, just had to cut the pvc for each specific rod so they were seated better and I used u bolts with nylon nuts. No complaints after driving 300 miles on the highway with them.

If you ever want to get rid of the tld, let me know. I’ve been looking for a 10 for a long time now. But if you want to keep it, that’s a great find. I have two 15s and a 30 2 speed. Can’t kill little reels.

I'll certainly let you know if I do decide to sell it. However, I think this one is going to stay in my collection. It's a perfect size for striper and blue fishing with live bunker on the kayak. I think the guy I got it from didn't know its kinda of a rarity. He told me it was a 15 when we worked out the deal and I was happily surprised when I saw it was a 10. Now I need to find his baby brother the 5.
