I installed a factory 2003 cummins trans cooler in series with the factory cooler. Only problem I have is that it sites behind the top of my skid plate and FYRLYT on the passenger side. It is large but I still wish I had more airflow. On a good note, driving to my parents in MT this last weekend, my trans ran a steady 150 with the new gears, new tires, and two wind catches (mtn bikes) on the roof while doing 80mph which is 2800 rpm.

Went wheeling today and I guess I’m STILL having overheating issues.....
My buddy and I ran a trail and I got up to 217 while he was under 200, same truck and same set up

I have replaced the fan clutch, t stat, coolant, water pump.

Is this radiator the answer? Doesn’t make sense...

It’s odd that my buddy was wheeling the same trail and never got over 200. It was 98 degrees out too. I’ll look into the 160 t stat

Has the Tacoma version came out yet ?

The fj/4runner radiator is larger. 70% more capacity than stock. Its NOT hard to install.
It is larger and should be more efficient than the stock one so it may help with temps.

Were yours and your buddies a/c on the same setting? That can make a big difference in engine temps, especially at slow speeds.

Did you get a new oem "pink" fan clutch?
Do you have your old one still?
If so you can put higher viscosity silicone fluid in it to make the fan work harder.

I still feel like my truck shouldn’t be running this hot though. Others run the same set up and don’t overheat lol

His ac was off and mine was on full blast. We weren’t going too slow probably around 15-20 mph in 2hi the entire time. My trans temp never went over 200

I did put in a brand new pink Aisin clutch. I had a Hayden but never installed it. The temps were hanging around 206...then climbed up to 213....then went all the way up to 217 which is pretty much exactly what it’s done in the past. Then it likely would have skyrocketed to 230+ (needle in red)

I tested it later with ac off and there was only a 2 degree difference (going down hill more though instead of up)

The previous owner also had overheating issues with this truck as well. It was at the dealer more than once for running too hot in hot outside weather....Which is why I replaced every part except the radiator as it looked fine

The a/c condenser creates a lot of heat that gets sucked right through the radiator which heats it up of course.
Since the truck has a history though it could be many things.
    Restriction in radiator
Restriction in radiator in or out lines
Restriction in return line (the one that goes all the way through the v"
    Fan clutch not engaging enough

When I was stock, I saw 205°F in a 45 minute stopped traffic situation. A/c was on and it was 95° outside. The clutch fan just doesnt move enough air at low rpm. I have since replaced my clutch fan fluid to 10k cst and it works much better. You can find it at Tower Hobbies. Make sure you put in the same amount you take out.

Back on post 680, I had the aircon on high. Driven it some more in the heat and it stays cool. I never turn the air off. Hit the 635 Express tollway this afternoon, 80-100 mph in mid 90’s heat. No issues. It’s a 190 degF truck in the heat.

It only overheats if you are actually driving it. It sat idle for about 30 mins with ac on (dogs in car) and never got over 200, and this was in the same 98 degree outside temp. I would be shocked if two fan clutches were not running correctly. Is it difficult to do the fluid swap in the fan clutch ?

No it's not bad. Do a google search. @loginfailed experimented with the fluid in his and turned me on to the idea.

There is less heat generated when parked due to no transmission load and torque converter slip.

It's not necessarily that the fan clutches are defective. It means they are not effective enough for the conditions. Thicker fluid will drive the fan harder but will decrease gas mileage.
The next time your truck is hot put it in park and rev the truck a little with your head out the door. You should be able to hear the fan.

Does it blow cold on the highway?
If it blows cold on the highway but much warmer when going slow or parked could mean low fan clutch lockup.

It’s the same on the highway.i checked my fan resistance against my buddies and it was the same. The AC compressor is going out. The bearing makes noise when the clutch engages. I already hve a new compressor on hand. When the truck was at the dealer they replaced the thermostat once, and the other time it looks like they did nothing.

My money is on the radiator being clogged up @anthony250f like I mentioned to you a while ago on IG. Just replace it with this CSF rad and I'll bet you that your overheating issues will no longer be a relevance in this conversation.

I had a 3000GT that would overheat only with the AC on. I replaced the radiator with a dual core design, all of the overheating issues ceased to exist. Likely a slight clog in the rad which only improved in the lack of overheating once the single core was switched out with a dual core design.
