Just more evidence that Monaco has become more about the history of and glamour of F1 than actual automobile racing. RB was down around 25% or so on power for half the race and Ferrari was powerless to capitalize. Hamilton finished third and called the race boring. Verstappen had what was at least the second best car in the field and could only move up to ninth even though many of the back markers simply gave way instead of trying to hold position.

I gather from the post-race activity that Chris Horner didn't think it was a boring race. He was really hyped about Ricciardo's drive, and what a drive it was. But overall you're right, it was a pretty boring 2 hours. Indy was better -- at least it was with the option of fast forwarding through a bunch of it.

Verstappen hit the wall in exactly the same place he did 2 years ago, with exactly the same result. His passing antics late in the race got him a verbal reprimand too. He's heading out towards the thin ice. Even Horner said he needs to change his mindset.

Poor Alonso. McLaren is becoming an embarrassment. What the heck is going on over there.

Mercedes drop opposition to dropping MGU-H for 2021 engine spec


Formula 1 appears to be edging closer to an agreement over the future of the sport after a meeting between Liberty Media and the teams at Monaco.

A full proposal on F1’s next generation of engines for the post-2020 period is expected before the end of June.

"I see some common sense on the table," said Mercedes chief Toto Wolff. "It was a productive discussion. There are still areas where we are very far away but it is moving forward in a constructive and structured way."

And in an apparent breakthrough, Mercedes have dropped their opposition to the removal of the MGU-H component in the engine.

"We have given up on some of the stand points, we have accepted to lose the MGU-H. We think the [replacement] technology is a step backwards but in terms of achieving compromise for the benefit of the spectacle, the revs going up and louder engines, we can understand and can accept. On the engine regulations we are pretty close to be able to tick the box but the only major thing which we need to solve is spending and how to avoid spending double over the next couple of years by developing the current engine and the new one."

 

The absence of Ron Dennis in 2009 and the replacement with Martin Whitmarsh was the beginning of the end. Then after losing Hamilton in 2013 and dumping Merc for Honda PU's was the nail in the coffin.

Ricciardo to avoid Canada penalty


Daniel Ricciardo is set to avoid a grid penalty at the Canadian GP after Renault determined his MGU-K is re-usable after it's issue in the Monaco GP, Auto Motor und Sport report.

It is claimed the issue in Sunday's race, which forced Ricciardo to drive over 50 laps with 25% less power on his way to victory, came around the assembly of his power unit and the component itself remains intact and undamaged.

Under F1 2018s regulations, each car is only permitted to use two MGU-K, energy stores and control electronics, so Ricciardo would have been facing a 10-place grid penalty in Montreal had he required a new MGU-K. His first one was damaged in his Practice Three engine failure at the Chinese GP.

Red Bull introduced a third MGU-K to Max Verstappen's pool in Monaco, given the Dutchman was already starting last which negated his penalty.

Indycar in no way will be the end of his Career. McLaren drove the knife into the Career of Alonso and Button years ago.

I think the wut is with how you worded that statement. McLaren didn't enter F1 with a crap PU, they've been in F1 for a long time. It's more fitting to say they started the season with a crap PU.
