I usually go about 90 min on smoke mode, which is about 180f, then move it up to 230. I might try using my new 26 Weber kettle to smoke a butt, using the snake method.

CookingPellets 100% hickory. I started with Louisiana Grill pellets, which were awful, then to Traeger, awful, then CP. A huge improvement. They're good pellets and improve the flavor, but I'd like more smoke.

I tried the CP Competition blend but didn't notice much of an improvement over the hickory. There's no retailer around here for good pellets- it's all Traeger and Louisiana Grill crap. I may buy a bag of mixed Lumberjack or other good brand on line, pay the expensive shipping, just to try.

I've seen pics of people doing this but for those of you that have an offset smoker box, do you put a metal pan on the right side of the main cooking grate next to the hole on the smoker box to help the smoke or heat not go straight up to the top of the lid and out the exhaust stack?

No. Though I might try the dryer tube extension soon.

You could do that from the standpoint of using it as a tuning plate or heat deflector to minimize hot spot at that point. A thicker metal piece would be better though

I'm thinking I want to try this as well. I'm not sure how true this is, but I read where its hard to get the temp up with the dryer vent. I can't see how that would happen though.

so a good friend of mine is going on a camping trip with his buddies.
He asked if he could borrow one of my portable grills.

I told him I have an almost new weber smokey joe he can borrow. (it's the rare copper color).
I told him he could borrow my charcoal chimney also because I dont want any lighter fluid on my grill/smoker.

Well, I left the smokey joe and chimney out last night so he could pick them up after work.
This morning I see the chimney is still out there. I asked why he left the chimney and he replied, "I don't need it":annoyed::boom:

    Hmmmmmmmmmmm

Ya I was amazed when I went to good pellets. Such an improved flavor in them. Sometimes I will run just in smoke mode for a while then dial the heat up to the needed place so that I get a heavier smoke flavor.

"you can lead a horse to water, but you cant make him drink"

I told him about the charcoal chimney. Even told him I have two of them so make sure to take one.
I even texted him 2 youtube videos showing how to use a charcoal chimney.

This is why I didnt offer my new white kettle and my 1972 brownie. :bananadead:
