Why are aftermarket wheels such a thing?

Most aftermarket rims (along with aftermarket head/tail lights) fall into the automotive equivalent of:

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt."

I, for one, appreciate the heads up they give me.

If you lift your truck you need to widen the track width to help keep the vehicle stable and not prone to rolling over. I think the specific amount depends on a lot of factors, but I’ve heard a rule of thumb is that for every 2” of lift you need 1” extra track width. You can accomplish this with wheel spacers, or with aftermarket wheels that have more offset.

Aftermarket wheels can also be lighter weight, which helps when you are running heavier tires. However, since it’s the rotational moment of inertia that is affected by the mass increase, the mass that is further away from the point of rotation has an exponential effect on increasing moment of inertia. I remember doing the calculations and it would require shaving about 10 lbs from a wheel to make up for 1 lbs in tire, which ain’t gonna happen. Still, light wheels are nice, just not as big of a benefit when you are increasing tire mass.

The other benefit that I see is being able to run wider tires safely. A lot of 285 width tires aren’t rated for the factory wheel width, although people run them anyways, if you want to keep things in the manufacturer suggested spec you need wider wheels when running wider tires.

It' all about making your truck better looking in your mind and not like off the rack like someone like yourself likes their truck just as plain as when you bought it. If you would just open your mind a bit you might see that' why most taco heads buy them. If it' not for you that' ok too. Try it sometime it' will be ok20170224_100926.jpg

Why do girls wear makeup? Some do it cause they need to, but there are some gorgeous girls that still wear makeup.

Maybe I'm one of the few......but....I really like the wheels that came on my SR5.

I currently don't have any plans for lifting....just going to run these larger mud tires and enjoy the factory wheels.

If I ever do decide to lift....then I'll possible investigate other options. I really like the SCS Ray10's in dark bronze. I'd likely go with them if I were making the choice today.

I don't envy guys whose wheels protrude further out....the mess that slings off their tires must splatter all over their truck's sides. I like that my mud is better "contained" with the factory wheels.

It's all in what you want to do....and what you can work into your budget.

For the $1,000+ that I'd have spent on wheels I was able to instead get custom seat covers, step rails and 6 speakers to replace the pitiful speakers that came with my SR5.

The answer, OP, is obvious.....its' all in what you want to do with your truck....be it looks, comfort, performance, safety, etc.

Aftermarket wheels are a reflection of what you want your ride to be. When I bought my truck I told my wife the butt ugly steel rims had to go. My truck looked cheap and it was worth the cost to change that.
It maybe some sort of complex because I have changed the wheels on about every car I have ever owned over the years.

Haha my trucks isn't "plain" like it came off the rack. When I make an expensive upgrade I'd strongly prefer it to have a function not just be aesthetically pleasing. I have done many small things to alter my trucks look...they just weren't expensive...so I was asking if new wheels accomplish both...

I didn’t like the wheels it came with. Didn’t like the look. Didn’t like the offset.

Because there’s just SOMETHING about black and chrome wheels “sinking” in Quicksand?
