Man seen jumping to his death into Grand Canyon

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK - Grand Canyon rangers say they've recovered the body of a man who was seen running up to and jumping into the massive gorge.
Park officials received a report of someone over the edge near Mather Point on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park at about 5:40 a.m. Friday.
Responding rangers spotted a body between 400 and 600 feet below the rim, and witnesses told them that they saw the man run up to and over the edge.
Initial efforts to hike to the body were unsuccessful, and search and rescue crew members had to rappel down into the canyon to recover it.
They lifted the man's body out around 1:15 p.m. by helicopter. He was taken to the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
Rangers are investigating the death as a suicide. The man's identity was not released.

wouldnt think there would be much of a body left to recover after jumping from that high... shitty. i guess thatd be the way to go if you really had to. sure would be quick!
unless by some sort of miracle you didnt die... ouch...

 

We were visiting the canyon over the winter and on one of the Ranger tours they talked about a fellow that drove off right in the village area after driving along the main walkway untill he found a spot without a fence and made a turn into the canyon!!!

Thankfully he did not hit anyone on the trails.

Can't say that I blame him, I always said that if I knew I was going to die, some kind of terminal illness or something I'd definately go on my own terms. I'd probably take the skydiving and "forget" to pull the cord method though, really no chance of accidently living through that.

true, studies show that people actually have heart attacks shortly after jumping, so odds are he passed on before he hit the ground.
