LED Fog Light Replacement Bulb

It's difficult to see where the cutoff of the fogs is...did you know you can turn on just the fogs by using the parking light option with fogs on? Try that picture to see where the height is at that same distance.

If it's higher up on the wall than the height of your foglamps, the beam is extending upward, and if it's extending upward, at some distance, it will overtake the low beam cutoff

My kid could have probably drawn this better but the top illustration is roughly what they should be doing.

The bottom appears to be what yours are doing. At distance A like your first picture, it appears okay. At B it still doesn't appear to be overtaking but is showing its upward angle, and at distance C is where oncoming traffic is and is having to look away because they are in the path of the light.

That bottom drawing is probably spot on. Thankfully I dont need to use my fogs often and do so more offroad or on backroad highways with little to no traffic. Something people def need to consider when purchasing.

I just installed a set of the MorimotoXB LED fogs and I'm not overly impressed with the light output. They are aimed and set in the proper position. I think my expectations were a little high, after all they are just fog lights. In my opinion it's not worth the extra money, I should have just bought the Opt 7 LED headlight bulbs for the fogs.

 

I have a set of the Opt7's I want to get rid of. If you want them PM and save a few bucks.

 

Thanks for the offer, but I`m just going to stick with what I have. The MorimotoXB LED fogs are an improvement, just not what I was expecting. If I had to do it over I would buy the Opt7`s.

 

Full replacement Morimoto XBs are the correct way to go. Anyone advocating putting a drop in LED in the foglight reflector housing should read this:

As you said, they are fogs so you can't really use them for what they're intended to be while expecting drastically better visibility over the already fairly good stock setup. You can go with different bulbs, or different housings that throw light everywhere and look bright, but they aren't doing what fog lights are truly supposed to do which is to provide good, low glare visibility in adverse conditions.

The XB has a much narrower pattern than the stock bulbs and while the throw is wide, the stock throw is also very wide. Light output isn't siginificantly higher either. IMO it is definitely better than stock to a decent degree, but not to the point that it's going to be any sort of real wow factor. You get the color, and you get good functional visibility.

I just put on Lamin X film with LED bulb replacements - looks great and light output increased a ton...Bulbs and film all in came out to about $47, so a cheaper option too.

After doing some research on bulbfacts.com, I decided to try the Beamtech H11's ($36.99 on Amazon - link below). After reading everyones posts, I was concerned about blinding everybody from putting LEDs in the stock reflectors, but I decided to try it anyway. First with the low beams, and when those turned out great, I bought another pair for the fogs. Both worked GREAT! The Beamtech LED H11's place the LED's in the same location of the stock filament bulb, so my cutoff lines are actually the same! Very happy with them and crazy bright! I'm attaching before and after pics, mostly for comparing the fog cutoff lines. I forgot to take a pic of the cutoffs for the stock bulbs, but you can clearly see the lines with the low beams anyway. Biggest reason I wanted to do this is because I upgraded to a DBCustomz grill with LED lighting up the TACOMA and the light colors didn't match. VERY happy with how it all turned out!

The LEDs don't have glare in your low beam headlights because you have projectors, while you lose distance projection with LEDs you don't blind anyone due to the light shield of the projector. Your fog cut off is no where near the same.

You do realize the giant orbs on the wall in this photo, not present in the stock fog photo, is massive glare. This is exactly what you were warned about and why you should not run LEDs in halogen reflectors. This is about as far from 'great' as you get and now you are 'that guy'.

Again, photos demonstrating significant glare from the fogs, not brightness.

 

Hmm...well I guess if I start getting flashed I'll have to do something different. If they don't work without blinding people then I'll just put those in the high beams and get the Baja Designs LED kit that I wanted.

 

Baja Designs will be even worse for the fogs, they have no cut offs. Here is a Rigid Fog pod on the left vs a Baja Designs wide angle pod on the right, both nearly the same output. Rigid has clean cut offs to not emit glare and produce a brighter fog beam, while BD has no cut offs, emits terrible glare and has lower output in the fog region as the beam is spread everywhere and not focused. If you want to run a pod in the fog location on the street you want to look for SAE J583 Fog pattern, or look to Morimotos or KC G4s replacement fogs.



Edit: I should add if you are looking for an off road only light to not run on the street, the BD’s make for great trail lights.
