I will be getting 285s for my OEM wheels soon and wondering about the fit in spare tire location. I've been following this website close for over a year now and I rarely see talk about spare tires in general. I saw one old thread on it but it was completely pointless and went off topic.

    Questions-

Will a 285 BFG or Duratrac tire fit in the spare tire location like a glove? or will it involve some bending and cutting? I've seen people answer this both ways..

Will the exhaust pipe that runs right by it cause any damage to the tire? heat?

How come I see so many people with bigger tires ride around with the factory tire still in place and the spare no where on the truck? (Yes I know for off road ground clearance but directing this at the daily drivers) What happens when they get a flat?

@Hodakaguy repositioned his hoist and got the 285 to fit like a glove, i just got 285s and plan on doing the same when I pick up a new matching spare at my first tire rotation

I’m fairly certain you can make that work in the stock location. That said i keep my stock spare in it’s normal location and run a Hitchgate Max from Wilco offroad on mine. Kind of the best of all worlds IMHO... if you are worried about departure angle Wilco makes a high clearance version as well.

Simple and works.... or make sure you carry lug nuts for both rims and the appropriate lug wrench’s....
