Used 2017 Tacoma failed emissions test (26k mi)

Hello,

I purchased a used 2017 tacoma 3 weeks ago and have put about 800 miles on it since then. I went to get the emissions tested today and the OBD test came back as "not ready" for Heated O2, O2, Cat, EGR, and Evap. Which counts as failed.

It seems like the computer just can't get a reading on these elements or there isn't enough data. The tester suggested putting some miles on the truck, but 800 should be more than enough and it was purchased used.

I have not disconnected the battery and there is no check engine light. I have reset the maintenance reminder since purchase. She did not mention any error codes from the OBD.

Any ideas before I take it to my mechanic? I appreciate any input/suggestions.

 

Should still be under Factory Warranty

 

Before spending time and money, did you buy from a dealer? If so, maybe they can remedy this for you since it’s only 3 weeks old and having these issues and should still be under factory warranty. No?

 

How many miles on it? Emissions system have a long warranty

 

Take that to the dealer before private mechanic.

 

I bought from the used car portion of a non-toyota dealer.

I bought mine same way, still was under warranty. Got mine in December last year. Factory warranty just expired in March. 2016 Tacoma.

I say take it to a Toyota dealer.

 

Either one, where you bought it or a Toyota dealer. It should be under some warranty.

 

Take it to dealer. Emissions components are 60K or 100K, I can't member.

 

You need to eat more of these.

They shouldn’t, but my dealer is awesome. It’s warranty work. It should all be golden.

"emissions not ready" doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong, it just means that the vehicle needs more time to complete it's emissions cycle. If it had a check engine light anytime in recent days that was fixed and cleared, it can take several days for the emissions system to be 'ready'.

By all means, take it back to the dealer and see what they say...but this isn't uncommon. Do you have a check engine light on or code stored in the ECU? If not then I wouldn't worry...give it another week or so and see if it goes from 'not ready' to 'ready'. If there's a problem with a catalytic converter or O2 sensor then there would be a code stored..

8 Years or 80K miles by manufacturer. Federal law. Saved my ass on wife's Pilot that ate a Cat at 76,000 miles. Not sure of that applies to any of the sensors that are not part of the cat that can cause issues. 26K should still be under warranty though.

Driven 800 miles in the past 3 weeks so I figure there would be at least one emissions cycle.

 

I've heard of vehicles failing because the engine isn't warm. You may have already done this, but make sure it's fully up to operating temp and try testing it again.

 

Thanks, but I was idling waiting in line at the testing center for 30 minutes in 90 degree heat..... because I'm an idiot and forgot its the last day of the month!
