I use to use one of those, until the A-holes started cuting that lock off with a lock cutter. Then they take it somewhere to cut it open and then return to take your vehicle.

Not sure about the elements side of the discussion and needing a ziplock bag, etc... but take it from this newbie who jumped in a pool with his fob less than a week after buying the truck - it will work fine the next day if you use the bag of rice trick!

Usually when I go rafting, I wrap the FOB in foil and put it in one of the cubbies in the bed, then latch the tonneau and lock the tailgate, taking the hardware key with me. The door stays locked and the truck doesn't detect the presence of the FOB.

So to make it clear to this muddled brain of mine, removing the hardware key disables the FOB?

Most key fobs, including ours, are o-ring sealed these days. Short dip in water won't do it any harm at all. I accidentally went snorkeling with my key fob once. It was from a crappy, bottom of the line, Nissan Versa rental in Hawaii. It spent at least an hour in the ocean with me. Got back to my car, realized my mistake, took it apart and noticed it was bone dry inside, put it back together, unlocked the doors, and drove off into the sunset. I would not rely on the o-ring if you regularly take a dip with your keys, but just mentioning this for anyone super paranoid about getting their fob a little wet.

Easiest solution for OP would be to put it in a quality dry box and keep it clipped to your belt loop or backpack. Here is one from pelican that you can also stash your phone in: https://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-C...&qid=1506445414&sr=8-3&keywords=small+dry+box. My experience with drybags is that they eventually leak once they get a little worn, even the nice rubber impregnated ones. A dry box on the other hand, will keep working as long as you keep the sealing surfaces clean.

Surfers and divers, Hitch Safe seems like it would be the best option for you, just not as secure as keeping it on your person.

Edit: corrected some minor grammatical errors so that @FrayAdjacent doesn't drop kick me in the teeth. =P

NO... You can disable it by pressing the "lock" and the "unlock" button for a bit... the fob then is turned OFF.

    EDIT... red light flashes....!!

This may have been posted already so sorry if it's a repost. I bought this RFID pouch and it works perfectly. Not bad for $9

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01HETGX00/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I tested it numerous times and it completely blocks out the fob signal. Also blocks out cell signals too if you put your phone inside it

They make small keychain and wallet sized dry boxes that work great in saltwater too, successfully tested in a grueling accidental underwater test by yours truly, too!

I didn’t know this design existed until I started looking into patents. It’s a good idea but not very secure. The face is only held on by 2 tiny pins, and with the dials on the face it seems like it would get full on mud in no time.

The design is have is a lot more secure and and easy to remove. I’ll be coming out with a new design soon that doesn’t say “hitch vault” on the end cap.

Did you have to buy the longer bolts so it would fit your Tacoma? The description makes it seem like you need to buy the longer bolts separately but someone mentioned in the ques/ans section that he received both the short and long bolts with his order so it fit his Tacoma.

i have one of those also, is good but for those of you in cold country in the winter think it would be a pain trying to spin those numbers into line. i just turn the last number when using it, leave the first 3 in unlock position.
