How to - Subaru/Toyota(3rd Gen) Tweeter Upgrade (Holy S***)

It's amplified and has a sub. Door speakers and tweeters are the same though

 

Wonder if I can grab the 6x9's and 6.5" door speakers (Alpine S) from my old Eclipse GSX and swap them in there....?

 

6x9s in the front and 6 1/2s in back door. You will just need adapters to mount them in the doors.

 

NO, the Tweeters will not work with JBL

 

What tweeters will work then? Are there any good aftermarket solutions?

 

I have no idea brother, I am sure there is something out there that will work.

I thought that I saw in ********* or crutchfield that there was a way to separate the tweeters from the front doors.

 

OK I just did this, took me about 3 hours but knowing what I know now I could do it in under 1. The front door gave me the most trouble because the Metra adapter didn't line up with the kicker speakers well. Also, I had those white clips on the sail panel fall into the door panel, anyone know where I can get those? Lol. All in all, good upgrade and the sound is great now! Well worth it IMO.

 

I had one of those white sail panel clips fall into the door, had to take the panel back off and stick my arm in the door to find it.

 

I had all 3 on the drivers side front fall in in one shot! I got one out with needle nose pliers, the others can stay lol I just ordered some on Amazon.

Edit: btw, for those that don't want to learn the hard way, pinch the clips to pull them out of the door panel then snap them back on you sail panel before putting it back on.

Edit 2: So after a few hours of driving I have to say this made a huge difference, highly recommend doing it. Everything is so much clearer and as a result I find myself listening with the volume mostly under 20 instead of close to 30 before swapping speakers.

 

I've seen several videos on the tweeter install with the Subaru's and it all seems pretty simple., But none of the videos I can find detail how to take the right side (Passenger side 2018) apart. I see there are two bolts that hold the panel where the grab handle is but there is also a button of sorts on the top of the right side speaker cover which is not on the left side. Is there a bolt under there or will the cover just pry off as the left side one does? I don't want to go forcing things and end up breaking something.

 

It's the exact same as driver's side with the exception there is 2 bolts.

 

Did this mod a few weeks ago and was pretty disappointed. Fast forward 2 weeks, music sounds amazing now. I don't know if there is some sort of break in period but the clarity has definitely improved.

 

Okay, thanks. So that button on top of the right side speaker cover doesn't come into play with prying it off?

 

I did not have the auto dimming lights so that “button” was just a plastic plug for me. No impact when removing the speaker cover. Not sure if you have the auto lights or not.

 

I do have auto dimming lights but I don't think that button has anything to do with it. It's just a plastic button.

Looks similar to mine. Maybe I’m wrong about that being the light sensor. If it’s just the snap in filler plug you’re good to go. It’ll come right up with the speaker cover. Remember to pull the A-pillar cover first. Then carefully pry the cover up starting at the edge nearest the passenger seat. Work back toward the windshield.

 

Completed the tweeter upgrade yesterday. The job was so simple with the most difficult part being unplugging the connectors from the stock tweeters.

I felt the difference was significant. I hadn’t really noticed the stock tweeters adding anything to the music. The new ones made themselves apparent immediately.

While changing the passenger side, I decided to let the radio play while I did the swap. When I unplugged the tweeter, the door speaker went silent. That means the tweeters and the 6x9’s are wired in series.

This means if either blows (goes open), the other will not operate. Disappointing design!

Experience has taught me that speaker break-in is real. The sound should only improve over time.

Completely pleased!

Next up, a pair of JL Audio C2 690tx for the doors. Great sound and I found them on Amazon for $131.

 

That is the light sensor for the automatic headlights, its no big deal during the tweeter swap.
