My reference was to the previous land grab to support 29 Palms.

What's a horrible idea? Removing the shop Lee has in place already?

There used to be a big gas station and repair facility in Yosemite. It’s still there but no longer open to the public.

Oh no. But they are saying not even Lee's stuff will be allowed under the plan. One reason is that the equipment is his. The other main issue is the location of the springs in the backcountry.

With a Tesla rapid recharging station! Maybe a dealership while they are at it.

Here's a video from the Bishop meeting. Lots of good information.

saw a lot of those jeeps everywhere last year during one of the spring break weekends. which brings this point, both lower and upper hot springs that weekend were so full we didn't want to deal with it, so we kept going untill we reached the sand dunes. Same thing, people were camped everywhere. That jeep rental company was up there to and had a huge 26ft Penske Rental truck up there with a huge circus tent setup with at least 10 3 person tents setup on the other side of the circus tent..

The NPS is not going to have any responsibility to provide any repair facility. If you look at the definition of "backcountry" it suggests self reliance. Recovery will be by normal methods in place now. This means Millers or another place which I believe is based in Beatty or Pahrump. Or a call/message to friends or recovery groups on social media.

The other big issue is storage of auto fluids on site and potential for water contamination. The environmental issue is of utmost concern for the NPS.

I’m pretty sure @DoorDing means a autoshop in Furnace Creek - not at the Springs.

During the meeting I attended they mentioned that no national park contains any type of auto repair facility.

Yeah I heard that in the Bishop video as well. And personally agree with that. Proper vehicle maintenance is a thing and AAA exists for when that fails. I don't think repair facilities belong in the park any place at all. That said suggesting one in Furnace Creek is a lot less crazy than one at the springs ;)

And that's why I avoid the tourist hot spots on holidays. Learned that lesson when I first got stationed in San Diego and tried to get a campsite in Joshua Tree during Thanksgiving. Learned the hard way that winter holidays = everyone from the cities goes east for desert fun times. Helluva culture shock between Southwest coast area and northeast/ Midwest winter holiday cultures.

Though a couple years ago I did DV over Christmas. Didn't have too many people around but still way more than I thought there would be.

Yeah it was back in 2009. I drove up to Joshua Tree Wednesday afternoon thinking no one would be up there.... Nope..... Literally every campsite in the NP was occupied. Didn't know anything about BLM land camping at the time (there's not really any BLM land on the east coast, it's mostly national forests that don't have as much camping opportunities as desert BLM land has) so I ended up driving back to San Diego that evening.

Maybe they meant backcountry. IDK. Regardless they don't want the repair stuff in Saline.
