If you can code in COBOL then you can afford to live in Cali the rest of your life. I knew one of the three COBOL cert'd pros in college. He made tons updating old bank software.

You already know I've been into computer stuff :)

It’s amazing how much infrastructure still operates on ancient equipment and ancient programming languages. There was a video of this Michigan School Dictrict HVAC running on the command line of a Commodore 64.

COBOL is hard. I won’t lie. At this point it’s more of a curiosity than something I can root a career in.

One of my old professors used to write store Point of Sale software. This guy is old, probably mid 70’s. He told me he knew a language called something like “System 45, Mark III” and he’s one of only three people left in the world that knows how to decipher it.

He was telling us the story of how he was on a road trip and stopped at this chain gas station somewhere in Texas. The cashier was trying to process some kind of transaction he didn’t know how to process on the point of sale software. The guy was like “I don’t know how to override this, let me get my manager.”

My professor said “Oh here, you do this and this.” And it worked. He said this guy was staring at him in disbelief and shock and said “How... how did you know that?”

With this smug look on his face, he said:

    “I wrote the program.”

I grew up in suburban California. My backyard was about 100x20 feet. I spent my childhood in downtown San Francisco and Oakland, never saw the outdoors that much.

I did love my Legos though.

I know a decent amount of Commodore and Apple BASIC, I can use CP/M, but I never learned to program in any modern languages besides the web ones like PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

I like Python. It’s so simple and easy to pick up. I learned to code in Java, and it’s just much more complicated. You have to worry about braces and formatting and all that Jazz. Every program I wrote began with “system main void string args” or something like that and I was always told to ignore it.

With Python, you start with a blank canvas and simple formatting. I wish schools would start teaching in Python instead of Java.

I’m pretty trash at CSS I’ll admit that. I made my website on WordPress.

I learned Python, but it's been 4 years and I doubt I could do anything with it now. Java aggravated me and I never got far with it.

Python hasn’t changed much. It’s based on C# if I remember correctly.

Java can go die in a hole. It’s a more superior and powerful language than Python but I can’t stand it.

I’m not a fan of sitting at a desk and coding something all day. That’s why I went for Computer Engineering instead of Science.

Coding, for me, is something I can do as a hobby on the side. I can’t do that as a career.

Yup I couldn't handle the boredom, I liked HTML (and its companions) for the creativity and instant gratification.
