06 concerns from sitting

Hey all, this seems like the place to get answers on everything Tacoma so here goes: Found a 06 TRD off road with tow package with under 25,000 miles on it. Was obviously sitting more than it was driven over the last 12 years. Wondering if I should have any concerns or look for anything that sitting that much could have a negative effect on? Truck looks really clean but don't know a lot about Tacomas yet as this will be my first. Thanks in advance!

 

Fluids such as oil, radiator, transmission, should be drained and replaced. Tired might have some rot. Check for rust on frame. Possibility of vermin chewing wiring...
But nice to find with such low mileage.

 

I'd definitely ask about how much it has been driven lately. If it has been then the fuel is probably good, tires will be obvious as well as the oil.

I would have concerns. In the last 12 years other than the oil I bet no fluid in that truck have been changed.

Good luck getting the drain bolts off anything without doing some damage.

I would definitely test drive it. Take it to a mechanic and have them look it over if you don’t have the know how to do yourself.

If you buy it plan on changing EVERYTHING, oil, all fluids to include transmission, replace the tires for sure, spark plugs, air filters, belts etc. And if you do all yourself make sure you have access to another vehicle if anything goes wrong.

The only thing I’d leave on are the brakes.

 

I would check wheel cylinders on the back (brakes). Those would be the rubber components I'd be concerned about.

 

Thanks for the info everyone. So this truck has basically every option and package you could add to the TRD off road in 2006 and then some. Wondering, does anyone know what the original sale price was for these in 2006? It has TRD off Rd, Tow Package and SR5

 

About 30k new I paid $27,500 in 06 but I have a prerunner trd offroad

 

Great find, congratulations! A lot depends on how it was stored. If t was in a garage, I would have few concerns about belts or hoses. Just check them for dry rot. Change the fluids as suggested, including flushing the brake and clutch systems. Other than that just normal stuff for 25,000.

One thing to watch for is leaking seals around moving parts like axle seals. When these don't get exercised regularly they can shrink a bit and leak. They may also reseal after driving a while.

The 06 had some known issues like head gasket failures. Frame rust is a potential issue on all Tacomas, so if it was driven in salt and stored, do a thorough inspection.

My guess is that you got a nice truck for a great price, so there is money for all the repairs and upgrades you will want

 

Here it is all shiny and new looking right before I drove it off the lot.... Then I had to hook up the boat and go chase walleyes

As embarrassed as I am to say it, I didn't do my diffs/transfer case until 100k (Life got in the way and all maintenance slipped except for oil changes and air filters). As a precaution I sprayed PB blaster on all drain/fill bolts once a day like 4-5 days in a row. Thankfully all bolts came off without a problem, just used a small cheater pipe on a few of the more stubborn ones.

 

191k miles and no diff oil change, no tranny fluid change, no spark plugs and I still get 381+ miles on a tank
