A good surprise at that. I don’t know what I’d even use it for, probably a wall hanger with my old penn reels and what not. A have a friend that had a 5 magged and he uses it for drum fishing. I cringed when I saw it with a hole drilled into the side of it.

I have seen a few where people put a magnetic cast control on the 5's and 10's for casting... They have a purpose and casting is not it :rofl:I have a couple old penn senators that still get use. I look at it like this, even if its old as long as it still works and fits the needs why not use it. I mean a nice avet is $200+ but this will work just as well for my needs at least. The decals on the 10 are almost completely gone but other than that it's in great shape. I completely disassembled it and greased it last night, nothing missing and it already has an upgraded drag plate. All the bearings are super smooth too. I didn't realize how easy the tld's are to work on and service.

Welllllllll... I used to use my 15s for throwing baits on the bottom for cobia, no more than 50yrds or so from the pier. I have one 3/0, two 4/0s, three 6/0s and three 9/0s that are in perfect working order but they’ve all been replaced by nicer more “high tech” stuff that never gets used anymore either :( maybe when I get a boat lol.

And they’re one of the easiest reels in my opinion, very few parts. Senators are a close second.

I haven't tried casting it yet so maybe I'll give it a whirl. I actually just talked to a guy who has a 5 for sale, he's asking $100. I'm not sure if I really need it....but I'm very tempted to buy it.

    Question for the bunch,

Should I get a tld 5 or a avet sx mc? The tld is $100 and I can find used avet's in the $150 range. It would be a jigging rod for kayaking. I just sold a bunch of rods/reels yesterday (that haven't been used in years) so I have some play money.

@DrummyTaco I did some casting with the 10 yesterday. I can get about 40 yards without getting a huge birds nest. I'm sure with some practice I could get a little more distance and less backlash.

Get the 5. Imo, avets are over rated, however, the 1st gen avets were/are unstoppable. I have a 1st gen mxl that’s a beast and never had an issue other than the clicker being burnt up because they use plastic gears for it. But the newer ones seem to have more issues than the older ones. A shimano thorium would be a good one too as well as a Trinidad if you can find one for a good price.

Practice and form lol. They’re super fast reels too which makes it difficult, so for you to get 40yrds for the first time is awesome.

Those reels are expensive! I didn't get that much playing around money! Did a bunch of research on the avet (not nearly as many threads on the tld) but I'm going to go with the 5, hopefully I can get it worked out with this guy. If not there are a few on ebay.

There is a nice looking 10 on ebay, buy it now for $80 seems like a fair deal with free shipping.

Torium isn’t that bad lol. The trini is, but they’re some of the best feeling reels on the market. I don’t own one... yet.

Good luck, if I trusted eBay I’d give it a shot but I just can’t bring myself to use it lol.

I buy too much stuff off of ebay and I've never had an issue with it in the last 5 years or so.

$200 I guess isn't too bad, but I need a new rod for a 5 too. Those ain't cheaper either.

I’ll look into it a little more again soon. Need to remember I need to focus on my truck more than fishing though so I can finish rigging it up the way I want before the fall bite gets here.

Ugly stik tiger lite jigging rod  no shame in going cheap sometimes. Caught a couple cobia (30-40lb) on a tiger lite and there were no issues.

I started to think about it, I know I have a somewhat decent Shakespeare boat rod. I had a daiwa round baitcaster on it and it was my jigging setup. That rod would work for a little while at least. I have a couple ugly sticks from my bass fishing days, I'll have to look into the tiger lite jigging rods :spy:

They’re not bad, under $100 when I got mine. I bought it cause I needed something right then and there. I still have it as a backup and will take it if I go out on a boat. A lot of budget people I know use them and I’ve seen many fish caught on them. I have a trevala that I use with my mxl and they’re the same thing really. The trevala is just a hair lighter and $100 more.

I think that tiger lite is going to be too much for the tld 5. I want something nimble for the kayak. I really just need to shop around at some stores with the 5 in hand to see what feels right.

Just looked them up, wasn’t aware that were were only a couple variations of them. I’m surprised they only lean towards the heavy side.

I shopped around, got a 6'6 ugly stik that I thought would work... hated it. So the 5 is on the talavera and I got a Shakespeare tidewater 6'6 MH for the 10 :crapstorm: Only paid $30 for the rod, I feel like I'm not doing the reel any justice but it'll work for my striper and blue kayak trip in three weeks! At some point I'll upgrade it when money allows or I come across another killer deal. It's actually not a bad feeling rod, maybe a little heavy but I'm not planning on jigging or working it to much, it'll be a good live lining set up.

Fair enough! I have to get my plans figured out, the purpose of the trip is not fishing unfortunately :annoyed:But I always take the kayak up there and sneak away for a few hours in the early morning :bananadance:

I will be up there for a few days around July 12th too!

That's great! I love trips where its whatever I want to do! On the bright side though, the weekends between though's dates I get to do what I want! So I'll probably hit Hatteras for a camping/fishing one weekend and Emerald Island another for 100% fishing!
