I did the upgrade Thursday and I too found disconnecting the oem speakers very difficult. The harness doesn't leave much room to pull the speaker clear and get a good purchase on the connector while you try to manipulate it lose. In the video the tech just taps it with a screwdriver or some such and it comes right off. Not so much. Other than that it's pretty easy.

When listening to music cranked up a bit there is a huge difference in performance. I'd say night and day from the oem speakers and I think it was well worth the $100 and effort for the upgrade. I do listen to a lot of talk radio (sports, politics et al) and usually keep the volume at a level where I can have a conversation with passenger. There is a noticeable improvement of the clarity even at the lower volume settings but it's not as striking as the higher volume music settings I use.

Thanks I figured that out. This is for the auto on/off headlights which I don't have so it's just a filler button. Earlier I said i had auto dimming lights, but what I was referring to was the high beam auto turn off feature which is controlled by a different sensor.

Do you only need to do this for the one speaker by the dash?

Or do you need to do this process for every speaker in the vehicle?

Not sure what a "tweeter" is, but I agree my stock speakers need upgrade. They sound tinny.

The small speakers up on the dash are the Tweeters, their sound is high notes.

Thank you, so I should order two of these Subaru tweeters and install on both dash speakers for the optimal results? Is that correct?
I always thought these dash speakers sounded tinny/fuzzy.

You'll probably notice a huge benefit changing out the door speakers. Search the $250 premium speaker upgrade. All 4 doors can be purchased for about $135. More than worth it.

    OK Thanks

Is there a step-by-step installation video anywhere for a novice?

The first thing the guy says:

"Make sure the battery terminal negative is disconnected from the battery, because you will be remving the corner panel and there is an airbag".

I have no idea what this means.

Should I not even bother to attempt this?

Respectfully, at this point you should consult with someone who is a little more comfortable with a vehicle electrical system.

It’s not a difficult mod, but if you are uncomfortable disconnecting a battery terminal it’s time to punt.

I'm in the middle of changing the door speakers; I've finished the front. Toyota should be ashamed of the stock, non-Premium Package speakers... Look at the size of the magnet of the stock, front door speaker on the left versus the standard magnet on the right

The stock speakers are pretty pathetic.

Just remove the wire that connects to the negative battery temporally while you are installing it.

I am not really mechanically inclined but all I did was watch the video and just did it. Really wasn't that hard to do, like someone said at first it was a pain to get the OEM tweeters out but once I kept at it, it came out.

Would anybody be so kind as to provide step-by-step instructions with pictures (or better yet, a how-to video) for somebody that has never popped the hood of a car before?

I really want to do this upgrade but have no mechanical background at all.

I think I can do it, except for the battery part.

Just do a ton of research. It's really not that big of a deal. Figure out how the battery works. Figure out how the stereo works then watch the speaker upgrade video and fill in the blanks with logic. You can do it;Just put in the work to fully grasp it.

The how-to video for the tweeter installation says:
"Make sure the battery terminal negative is disconnected from the battery, because you will be remving the corner panel and there is an airbag".

I was not sure what this meant, so
    I found this video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzG2tvp68mQ

Is this what I need to do?

So, I would only disconnect the black plug from the battery via the socket, then set the plug aside, then I am ready to put the tweeter in?

If so, I think I can do that.

After the tweeter installation, do I just reconnect the black plug back on to the battery via the socket? Anything else to do?
