I wonder if they would swap in. Don’t really feel like spending 1500$ on a new 3rd for a lsd and new gears. If i can just steal one from another truck

Getting ready to add my AALs in today..hopefully it goes smoother than last time I installed these dakars lol. Anything I should plan on needing other than my tools from last time, to do the AALs? Picked up some C clamps and saw horses...wondering if I should pick up some rubber lining to put between the leaves to take care of the squeaking.

 

I feel like rubber will wear out fast. I remember my all used like had plastic spacers
Doesn’t oem use like thin metal shims?

 

See the oreo filling in side its like a hard plastic disk almost like what you put under furniture so you can slide it around easy and not scratch stuff

 

Yeah and the Dakars have those yellow pads between each leaf but they still squeak like mad...blasting the leafs with a hose every few days takes care of it for a little while. Theres done kind of rubber lining made specifically for leaf springs I've seen used on here but I don't have time to get it before I do the install, so was thinking of just getting a sheet of thin rubber that I could cut to size. There's a write up in the 2nd gen forum of someonethat did that and used a pry bar to stick it between each leaf and said it cured the squeaking.

At any rate, the AAL install seems pretty straight forward...remove leaf packs, loosen leaf packs, slide AAL in, tighten them back up and reinstall.

 

I would just leave the leaf pack on the truck, easier imo

 

Well it is cruiser coolant hose time, I can't take my wheel off because my fucking socket is lost. I feel like I should live stream this fiasco.

 

Wernt you the one that told me if you clean up more you dont lose stuff...

 

Thought about that but I could only find one video where someone did that, every other one and every write up I've seen on here says to take them off...dunno if there's an advantage to doing it that way over the other. I'll crawl under the truck and see if it looks doable.

 

Thought it was in the tool bag for the cruiser, not in the garage. Wonder if a Toyota tech has it now

 

I leave em on the truck when I do it

 

Jack truck up
Unbolt axel
C clamp leaf
Remove center pin
Losen c clamps
Put aal in
Tighten c clamps
Put center bolt back
Put axel back

Its easy...

 

Given how much of a pain it was for me to line up the shackle and hangar bolts last time, I'd really like to try it and leave them on if possible. I'll give it a shot. Worst case I just take them off.

 

Alright well hopefully by tonight I'll have a pic of my rear end sitting a bit higher...can't start the install till around 4 today, neighbor is using the driveway. We share it with the person that rents our guest house

 

Here i wrote this up kn my build thread for other guys trying to out a aal on
Installing AAL
Disassembly:
1.chalk front then jack rear of truck up. Support with jack stands on the frame
2. Remove wheels
3. Remove shocks
4. Remove ubolts, either unbolt or cut them off(better to use new ubolts every time)
5. Jack rear axel off of leafs then support with jack stands
6. Place 2 c clamps on each side of the center pin
7. Remover center pin either cut or unbolt. I was able to unbolt mine but you probably wonr be as lucky
8. Slowly uncrank c clamps untill leaf pack is fully decompressed
reassembling:
1. Place new AAL under old leaf pack
2. Clamp down with c clamps untill fully compressed(i was not that strong so i used the center pin to compress tge leafs together this is not recommended due to it can cause damage to the center pin and strech it, i got extras so after compressing i put the c clamps back on and swaped center pins)
3. lower axel back onto leaf pack making sure to line up center pin with the hole on the axel (i found it doesn’t simply just line up, so between lowering the axel and jacking up on the leaf pack at the same time i go them to align. Remember to stick the plate untop of the jack you are using to jack the leaf pack up because if you forget all your hard work to get it align will be a a waste because you will have to lower it back down to put the plate on)
4. Reinstall ubolts, tighten evenly
5.reinstall shocks
6. Trim all bolts to proper length
7.reinstall wheels
8. Retighten all ubolts after 500 miles
Your truck will sit really high at first but will settle down after awhile.
Note that rear aal will stiffen your ride
Also new taller shocks are recommended after adding an aal

 

So you recommend 2 c clamps on either side of the center pin, so 4 total? Or just one c clamp on either side of the pin?

I picked up two from HF but I can go grab a couple more if it'll make the job easier.

 

Also I assume you're raising and lowering the axle off the leaf packs because you're SUA?

 

Oh i meant 1 on either side.

 

Yes i lift my axel up because sua, pain in the ass to take my axel out because I have to take my leaf off too lol

I should note that i wrote that for 5lug guys but it’s pretty much the same for 6lug guys
