Looking at a 2016 TRD Sport, blue with the tow package and off-road style running boards and tonneau cover that I believe are factory optioned. Also has nav and its a rear wheel drive (not 4x4). Previous to this one I had a 2011 TRD Sport 4x4 and it was great but I sold it when I moved south thinking I wouldn’t need it anymore. Now I miss it and have found a lot of reason why I need another one. I haven’t test driven it yet but it looks great, only fault I have found is reading user reviews on Edmunds and they appear to be lots of problems with this generation. Any truth to the complaints on the lower torque, transmission issues and windows rattling etc.? The build date on the truck is July so guessing it’s a late mode 2016

Test Drive and see what you think about it. I would buy a new one as the cost between late model used and new is usually not too big of a difference.

I priced the new model with the same options and it’s $7k more. The ‘16 has around 24k miles and looks new (FL).

Honestly reading this forum will give you PTSD before you step in the truck. Here my .02

    1.Go to dealer.
    2. Test drive the shit out of the vehicle.
    3. Haggle a bit. Leave.
    4. Come back after a bit and test drive the shit out of it again.

Rinse and repeat till you’ve come to a reasonable decision based on your real world experience with the vehicle.

If the third gens are giving you second thoughts there are always the later year 2nd gens.

Perhaps try finding a new 2017 leftover at a dealer, I've seen them discount new Tacoma's from previous years.

Depends on the truck. Test drive it, and have a mechanic look at it. If you can save $7K, that's significant. However, realize you can get a 2018 sport for probably 10% off MSRP.

Using autotrader to search and there are no leftovers within 100 miles, lots of used ‘17’s with miles and they are in the low $30’s for similar model. I’m more interested in whether this particular year has issues as many have posted or are they just a few whiners.

I used true car app and that said most in my area is 500 off. If I can get a new sport with the same options for $30k I will move in that direction.

A few issues like CPS and the transmission reflash, weeping diffs and a few others. Mind you, only a few percent of the owners had any issues.
Now, here on Tacomaworld, there are some with legitimate gripes but there are also a shitload of whiners. Why do they whine? Because they are responsible for spending $40K and only took a ten minute test drive. They want to blame Toyota, dealers and even other owners for their own mistakes. The Tacoma is not for everyone. It's a truck, plain and simple. It rides like a truck and handles like a truck. It's heavy and has a NA V6 so it shifts a lot.
How on God's green earth can someone coming from a BMW M3 or a Subaru STI or worse, a Ford F250 diesel, take a ten minute test drive and decide that truck is good for them. And then they blame Toyota! Mind blowing.

So when the guys tell you to test drive, take that to heart. Drive it in town. Drive it up a hill. Drive it on the interstate. Floor it. Go slow. Go fast. Back it up. But most of all, PAY ATTENTION to the performance, ride and seating position.
Then, if you are fine with it, get it. Good luck.

You need to test drive the particular vehicle you are interested in.

I joined TW right after purchasing my 10/15 build date SR5 in Feb. 2016.

I was originally perplexed by members posting issues with how the AT trans hunted for gears, and the "gutless" engine, since I wasn't seeing it with my ride.

To this date, I have had no mechanical problems, no howling, whining, or leaking rear, no rattles, etc etc and so forth.

But other members have had issues.

I also won't buy used, because I like to keep my vehicles until they are ready for the scrap yard. But that is me, you are the one laying out the cash, so do what you think is right.

Test drive whatever Tacoma you are interested in as long and far as you can, and if you are not sure, don't do it.

You also might test drive the GM twins and Frontier so you have something to compare the Taco to.

    Good luck!

Get the carfax report. All the TSB’s and everything that could have been taken care of by the dealer, should be on it. In fact, ask the selling party to provide it.

See if the dealer will give you the phone # of previous owner to ask why they sold it. They let me do this once but prolly dont make a habit of it.

I still think you can score a new Off Road or Sport for around 32k, that would be a way better deal than a used 2016 and interest rates are cheaper on a new one.

I’ll check the local dealer in the am and see what they have to offer. This one looks like a good deal to me though.

Why would paying +$5k for a similar vehicle be a better deal. Not trying to be a smart ass (just not aware) but have there been major improvements since 2016?

No change between 16 to 18 drive line wise.
    Same truck.
Only changes are sliding rear window, colors, safety sense etc.
2 years in mine and just needed a battery which they took care of.
Pulls 5k load better than my 2nd gen did is why I upgraded and interior doesnt look archaic, 18 % more hp, and the list goes on.
    Zero regrets.
