I would not trust anything not stainless or aluminum on the racks.

tnutz sells stainless ones and they have balls to keep them from sliding.

So here's the "almost final" design for the short bed (53" length). I have made it so you can easily configure equally spaced 6 bars or 7 bars.
I also have made it so that you can position vertical end bars and horizontal ones.

    Any feedback welcome

Please send me the BOM and pricing kind sir?

I don't have a topper, yet. So I'm thinking of utilizing this style rack as a bed rack and replace the redneck garage Yakima setup I'm currently running. It could still be a toprac down the road, only difference being the mounting points.

Finalized for the cab rack or just the long bed topper rack?

    short and long bed topper

will work on the cab right after now that my 3D model works and is to scale. I'm not 100% sure I'll be able to finish it before I return fro my road trip July 9th. Depends how fast things go in the next few days.

Thanks for the pics. They help. The pictures of the smittybilt on Amazon don't do it justice. They look really flimsy there, but these pics make them look usable.

I need to take some measurements and see what I am going to put together. I expect I will be using between 3-4 cross bars as opposed to the 6-7 on most other builds. I am pretty sure I will be able to get the rack to be low enough to be below my regular cross bars so when travelling with kayaks, everything will still tie down appropriately.

The only thing I am still struggling with is how to attach the carriage bolt or nut to the plate that will keep the rack attached to the rail (the only picture I left from your post).
