Agreed, the more a vehicle is modified, the less it’s resale value.

I love the stock height and you can always upgrade the suspension without lifting and also keep stock tire size. Also, love the factory OE rims, aftermarkets just look cheap to me and they cost even more.

+1 Stock here, it's going to be kept for awhile and from previous experience there's something comforting about the boring OEM factory parts that just work and last.

You both make good points. Sometimes the mod bug hits hard. Especially when you see nicely done trucks like a lot of the ones on this forum.

that’s not entirely true at all. modified vehicles can sell for more than stock counter parts and do all the time. Is joe craigslist going to pay more? not likely. But for a lot of these trucks the right buyer will. There never will be a 3rd gen on BAT. i could sell my truck for more than a similarly optioned stock one. certainly not dollar in dollar out but...

I opted for "best of both"...I'm running the 4R Pro wheels and the suspension off a TRD Pro Baja...more capable, better looking and used upgraded factory parts which SHOULD cause no issues. I knew I was going to modify the truck which is why I didn't opt for the Pro initially. The Off-Road was perfect platform.

Almost entirely. The more you spend the more you lose when you go to sell it. Other buyers don’t want your aftermarket stereo, or the stinky sleeping platform and cap or the big ass lift you put on it.

Most all vehicles including Tacomas are depreciating assets, anyhow.

Mine is mostly stock but I do have sliders, and an LED bar on the way. If I swap suspension I will be keeping it very close to stock height

I would say though that if you go to a dealership and see a Tacoma with a bit lift and aggressive Mud Terrains, I promise the sticker price is easily 5-10k over what it should cost

everything besides houses (for the most part are depreciating assets.) houses in detroit for 25 years have been depreciating assets. thankfully that seems to be turning around

i’ve spent 20 years of my career in the aftermarket industry. i know the game pretty damn good and have done pretty well selling lightly and highly modified vehicles.

that’s because dealers control financing and will put someone way under water without batting an eye

Im taking an oem + approach towards mine. This is my first tacoma and out of the box I am amazed with what it can do so I don't have an issue with it being stockish. But pro suspension and tires are next on my list and that will pretty much be it as far as "big" mods

So far on my sport I’ve put 17” pro wheel, tonneau cover, front skid and fox level 3 kit... I’ve put 30k miles on mine this year and can’t say I’ve noticed a flaw since the mods... suspension actually gave it a smoother ride... didn’t go with a crazy lift so didn’t need to change UCA. but.... to each there own

Mods: Is this still a Tacoma?
Couldnt have said it better, we all started as silent lurkers, once we got our Tacoma, this forum became the place for mod inspirations ($$$) or to find resolutions to problems. The only stock look I’d be content with is the TRD PRO but I don’t off-road so dropping all that cash for looks wasn’t economical because I can pick and chose what and how much to spend to achieve my aesthetic needs.

    Workin' on it....
I dunno......I get the whole if you mod something, there are more variables etc. but once you get the truck dialed in with lift, alignment, moderate increase in tire size etc, I think things are pretty stable and offer superior performance over stock. I've done a modest lift and the truck drives night and day better than it ever did stock. I'm only running 265's so not a huge increase in tire size either. I think you can create a significant performance increase without going hog wild if that's your goal. Stock is good to if you don't want to lose money trading it in later or having to part out / go back to stock sale stuff. I plan on keeping my truck until 200k-300k miles.

I've added a few things to my 2016 SR 4x4 4-cyl 5-spd... intermittent wipers, cruise control, gasshole, receiver hitch, seat covers, and floor mats.

The only real mods that I've done is the AC drain mod and I removed the air dam... might loose a MPG without that, but I don't care... just didn't like it.

I do like the look of the TRD's and ones who have lifted theirs, however... I don't really want to lift it... I just need 4 wheel drive once in a while, plus I'm kind of a tight wad... well maybe not when it comes to food... but hey, I can still afford that since I didn't get that TRD in quicksand. :p

I thought about going with the largest tire I could get without lift, but given that this is geared a little higher than my old gen 1, I decided just to stay with the stock tire size... maybe boring to some, but it still looks cool to me.

Being my first Tacoma I wanted to keep the truck as close to stock as possible just to get a true gauge of the reliability for myself after all the capability from factory was a big reason I went with the Tacoma along with the manual trans. When my shocks go I do plan on upgrading but nothing major, buying the sport I always planned on replacing those however I havnt had any complaints about the Hitachi's tbh. Currently have 71k/kms I have been driving the truck alot more then I planned so staying stock makes more sense for me right now.
