Actually the $50 Garnish is also a solid piece of black plastic as well. The shinny side I believe is just some sort of graphic. Perhaps made of vinyl.

I picked up a 2018 TRD OR 2 weeks ago and was able to pick up the TRD Pro grill and garnish from the dealer.

yeah who was the OG for this? I jumped the gun and got my grill/plastic situation sorted about a month before I pickup my truck haha. winning.

Yep it's something called millimeter wave radar, which does work through solid plastic when the radar device is mounted directly to it. Lots of interesting info about it on the interwebs.

Looks like the originals were broken. Use a small flat head screw driver and push underneath the little flap and push in. The mounts are oval shape and the tabs if I remember correctly are located on the ends.

I have a 2018 trd off. What is the part number for the garnish I need to get from Toyota?

I don’t plan to cheap out the $50 and do a custom plastic piece. I don’t want to get into an accident and risk the tss not working and get in any trouble with my insurance in messing with the security system

No it’s like a dark gray. If you look at the OP’s pictures it’s the same way. Or if you go to a dealer parts page and look at pics it’s a dark gray. I think the fake china grilles are black.

Just did the install over the weekend. I bought the OEM grill off Amazon ($385) my local dealership had them in stock but want $500!! I bought the garnish from Ebay thru Manhattan beach toyota, guess I could have drove their and bought it in person since they're only about an hour away, think I paid around $60 including shipping.

Install was pretty easy, managed to take the original grill off without breaking any tabs. Hardest part of the whole process was taking off the plastic washer piece that holds in the plastic tabs but managed to lift them off using two flathead. I just cut the plastic tabs off on the trd pro grill to remove the insert since I'm not using the insert but the garnish. Rescued the washer from the original grill to secure the garnish on the TRD pro grill.

I didn't need to buy any extra parts or use any additional zip ties for the tss wiring although the wiring is too short to use all the tab brackets to remount all of them so I left the last one just hanging but you can't tell.

Bought the 90 dollar Chinese grille and installed it last night. Used the license plate holder idea that was mentioned a couple of times in this thread instead of a garnish. Turned out good. On my way to work, at the end of my 35 minute commute I received a warning that the pre-collision sensor had an error then the radar cruise control was disabled. I turned the truck off and back on and the errors went away. If it keeps happening guess I'll break down and buy the shiny garnish, which I don't want too cause I don't like the shininess.

Is there a calibration process needed for this mod considering the radar is now a few inches lower. I believe this is why Toyota is now make us jump thru hoops to get a factory grille.

I’m running my TRD pro grill for over a week now on my 2018 OR without any errors or issues, systems works as advertised. Use the garnish and you’ll be fine.

If anything, it’s a good excuse for a lift. “Sorry babe, my grill is having errors because it’s 3” lower, so I’ll need to get a 3” lift asap”

Toyota wants 238.00 bucks and the truck for a half day to re-calibrate the radar system.

Or a $50 garnish that takes you 15 minutes to install. No calibration needed
