Seems like a pretty good idea.

    HIGHLY agreed!!!!

My AC absolutely struggles at idle keeping it cold in the cabin but as soon as the engine RPM starts rising above idle it starts working fine again. A testament to the lack of air the fan moves at idle, which is seriously crap. Like, its a real problem in 100*+ heat.

Same here. Blows in the 50s at idle and down to 42 while driving.

In the Subaru world, this is called "boost season!" :D

It's so annoying huh! The problem is, there is next to nothing we can do about it unless we rig an electric fan for it.. I trust the clutch driven fan more than the electric ones though.

I LOVE boost season! Power loss season is among us right now. Let us take a moment to pray to the boost God's for the return of boost season. Lol.

Do you think a puller fan behind an aftermarket trans cooler would help? Or I wonder if it would be better off to just setup a pusher fan on the condenser.

I would love to go to E fans as well but the controllers going out is what scares me. It seems a lot of the attractive aftermarket options use less than ideal parts.

I don't think it would help much if at all. It would probably only further tax the system honestly as was previously mentioned. The way you could rig it would be very easy to do. Just splice the power into AC compressor signal power up wire (or maybe it is ground, I don't know without looking at the schematic) and the fan would only energize once the compressor powers up. It would be easy to do, but I don't think it would help much if at all because at the end of the day the clutch moves the same amount of air it always does at idle.

Makes sense. I still want to open up my hood scoop so some of the hot air can escape there. Maybe it will flow more air at idle but I doubt it.

I think another issue is hot air coming in through the hvac intake. I think the tacoma’s cowl is setup in a way that makes the hot air from the engine bay make its way into the hvac. Between the 3 different 2nd gen tacomas I have had, they all intake warm air with the temp selector on the coolest setting with out engauging the AC(Warmer than ambient air, in other vehicles I have never had this). Combine that with low idle air flow then on hot days the AC really doesn’t help all that much. I think if anything I think we may find with these radiators even though our motor stays cooler our AC may suffer since the fan has to pull through the thicker radiator. Maybe we should start a new thread to brain storm some of these ideas. I tried making one awhile ago I think but it did not gain any traction. A dual electric fan setup might be the best option with the possibility of failure. Maybe set them both up standalone so if one fails hopefully the 2nd fan will still work.

I think it would apply for what your searching for as well. Low engine rpms, but high fan airflow.

More feedback on the radiator. Today it's been raining off/on and the temp has been in the mid/high 70's. Drove the truck about 100 miles so far today and it's a rock at 185 with the 170 thermostat. Did stop raining and I had some opportunity for boosted blasts down the freeway. Pretty steady at 185. So, why doesn't it run 170? 185 is fine, but I would think it could hold a cooler temp. It holds 188 when it's 95 outside. Maybe the URD-supplied thermostat isn't really 170...

That's just when the thermostat opens. Apparently you're still making enough heat to make the engine run at 185.

Correct. The thermostat starts to open at 170. Coolant flows from the front of the engine to the back. The temp sensor is in the back where coolant temp is hottest.

I am not entirely sure I am comfortable with the idea of an electric fan for our trucks. They have proven time and time again that they are not capable of withstanding the test of time in the failure/ overheating arena.

It was 110 today. My flexalite was crucial for traffic, but I could tell I need just a tad bit more capacity..

    Radiator, here I come!

Following members of this thread I modded my fan clutch and my ac feels better and truck did NOT even come close to overheating in 4.5 hours of 4lo off-roading in 90* heat today. Truck ran between 190-200 the entire time. Before the truck would have been running over 220 for sure. Fan clutch works great but it’s kinda loud when flooring it from a dead stop. @loginfailed @Roostfactor HUGE improvement.
