2017 - No Cruise Control

I'm looking at a 2017 Tacoma to buy and while it has backup camera and blue tooth, it doesn't come with cruise control. Really ? Shocked that it even comes with a steering wheel. Anyway, I read that it's possible that it does come pre-wired for an add-on control stick. Any idea how to determine if it does ?

What trim level is it? SR?

 

Yes, SR

 

Base SR does not come with cruise control, keyless entry, intermittent windshield wipers, or fog lights. There are plenty of threads where people have added all but the keyless entry for cheap and easy mods.

Yes, for both cruise and intermittent wipers. PnP in about 20 minutes. Doing both and taking your time.

If the rest of the truck meets your needs, don't be lured into spending $35k for more shiny.

The real question folks should be asking themselves is 'why' any 3rd gen is on any used car lot.

Barring a poor financial choice, a financial change of fate, buying the wrong vehicle to begin with (like I really needed MPG or more seating) or just automotive ADD, what was wrong with the vehicle that someone traded it in?

 

Hmmm. I'm used to keyless entry, fog lights and split rear window plus all mentioned above on my current truck. Would love to stay that way.

 

Then the rest of the truck doesn't meet your needs.

Well, wants. Can't imagine any of that being need. But maybe.

It was kinda disappointing, but installing intermittent wiper controls and cruise control was easy and only $220 for the OEM parts. I thought about keyless entry, but I've never had it and decided I could live without it... kinda the same with the sliding rear window, I think I used it once or twice in 18 years to transport some long trim boards. My 1st gen was a SR5 and I might have purchased another, but wanting a manual with the 4 banger, the current choices were very limited and I had to extend the search on Auto-trader or Car Gurus at least 200 miles just to see one... and if you want a manual in a 2018, it seems you have to get a TRD Sport or Pro and I wasn't too keen on spending $10000 more just to get a manual. It floors me that there are no more base models with a manual... it's just wrong, but it's what the market wants I guess... soon they'll be driving for us too.

 

99% of the time those trucks are poor decisions. Very rarely is there something wrong with a used truck that new. Even if there was, it has a warranty

 

I was looking at the Tacoma TRD family, but just couldn't get by, nor justify the cost. I didn't even want to stretch for the SR5. I almost didn't buy a Tacoma at all until the salesman said I should look at an "SR" they had just rolled off the trailer. The first thought that came to mind was no ground clearance, black bumpers, roll-up windows, very basic audio, vinyl flooring, etc. He said they only get one or two with each shipment due to what he called the "TRD craze." I had just begun looking, but we walked to the back of the property to see it, and I was thrilled that it had the same stance as the 4x4, painted bumpers, and pretty much the same interior as the costlier models. I told him I'd be in touch after checking the competition, left, hit Chevy and Nissan on the way home, and decided to see what the SR could be bought for.

I then committed the ultimate car buying sin, and got blinded by giddiness. The price I negotiated over the internet was fantastic, so I headed back to the dealer with my wife, and she got hold of the sales manager and sweetened the deal, getting an even lower negotiated price. I didn't even know she was negotiating with the sales manager, as I was looking over the truck outside. It had a BlueTooth stereo and power windows, and I assumed (the sin) it would have other basic items like intermittent wipers, cruise, and keyless entry, being that it was 2017, and not 1956. I never thought to ask, because there were buttons on the steering wheel and the typical wiper control stalk, I had successfully connected my phone to BlueTooth, and the price was lower than I ever dreamed I could get on a NEW Tacoma.

On the way to the salesman's desk finalize the purchase, he turned to me and said "you do know it doesn't have keyless entry, right?" My pants almost fell around my ankles. I told him, as menial as it sounds, I'm going to have to walk from the deal as I can't do without it, particularly in Florida with the summer rains. How can a 2017 vehicle not have keyless entry???? I walked outside to clear my mind of this shocking revelation, and my wife tracked down the sales manager who said they have a factory upgrade kit to add keyless entry. By the time she was done with him, it was added to the invoice at $0 cost for the part and installation!

So the giddiness returned, I get the deal done, and proceed to head home, a proud new owner, looking down upon the rest of the traffic from my 4x4 stanced, 2WD, 2.7L Tacoma SR. I hit light rain on the freeway, so went to activate the wipers. That's when I found it didn't have intermittent wipers. I had a sick feeling. Then I went to set up cruise control for ride down the freeway. Where's the controls? I thought to my self there's absolutely no way it doesn't have those basic features, so the ride home was tense. I figured I'd wait until I got home to familiarize myself with the truck. Get home, and found the truck didn't have either. Talk about buyers remorse.

I immediately came in the house, and found this forum. 5 minutes of searching and I was on my way to intermittent wipers and cruise control. 20 minutes and under $200. A month later I added Tacoma Sport take-off wheels/tires that I bought with 13 miles on them, then added Gen 2 running boards and WeatherTec mud flaps. Aside from missing the fender flares (I personally like the non-flared lines better), the truck looks like a debadged, $35K+ TRD Sport. Ironically, the giddiness has returned, and I'm thrilled with the truck.

 

So they added keyless entry?

 

Cruise control sucks on these trucks with auto trans anyway. Don't waste your money on the mod.

 

Love it. Use mine all the time in the mountains.

Used on my 1800 mile trip from VA to CO. Used it on my trip from VA to NY, used in on my trip from VA to GA.

 

It didn't have cruise control?

 

Mine sucks. Very disappointed in how awful it is. The only time it works without downshifting and throwing my head into the headrest constantly and living above 3k RPM is when there is no wind and not even the slightest inkling of a hill. When using it I get around 15mpg at best, without it I'm in the 19-20mpg depending on highway speed. Cruise control is worse than my wife's old 4 cylinder Tribute. It is one of the very few things I'm upset about with my truck. Very disappointing on an MSRP $41,800 vehicle. As a matter of fact, cruise on this truck is nothing short of a POS!

 

I get great gas mileage with cruise control and have never experienced any of those issues.

 

This post just made my day. I just bought a 2017 SR and was wishing I had those features. Excited to try and add them myself!
