My wife @gasparic104 had an oil change done on her 03 corolla, newbie mechanic either used the wrong filter, or didn't put it on right. Long story short, the oil filter came off 3 minutes on the road and drained all the oil, then seized the engine. The owner of the shop came and picked us up, the kids lucky he still has a job. We got a newer engine and the corrolla went from 275k miles to 112k

The best part was the look on the kids face when he tried to start it with a new filter and oil. He knew he f-d up then. That's when the owner pulled him to the side of the shop and had some words just out of ear shot.

I buy my filters in bulk on Amazon or EBay and do the $12 rebate on Mobil 1, definitely a cost savings if you look for it.

I very much trust a lot of privately owned shops - where the owner is present and also has dirty hands because his shop and his customers are his livelihood.

How many of you guys hold off and change their oil at 10k+ miles? I understand that synthetic oils are much better then older conventional oils but I think that interval is too long.

On all of my past vehicles that took synthetic (BMW's), they would get a change out at about 6.5-7k.

In the grand scheme of things oil and filters are cheap. Changing it is easy, might as well do it often. I can guarantee you that my new truck will not be waiting until the 10k free service to get its oil changed..

OK, but what are you basing that on? Why do you think that is too long? Have to analyzed oil to determine this? Do you have any factual evidence or is it just your "feels"

    Exactly.

This should be the 2nd Post in any 3rd Gen oil thread:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/oil-test-results-from-30k-oil-change-update-40k.505428/

Thank again, @Woodrow F Call for keeping the facts real.

Beyond that, the only time it should cost $50 to do an oil change is because you picked up a second 5qt jug of full synth at Walmart to get to 6qt.

I don't see the question really answered. If you're going to use 0W-20 then you will have to use synthetic, that's not B.S. It's not feasible to make a 0W in a conventional oil.

I am basing my statement on personal preference, no facts or oil analysis needed.

I was just asking how many actually wait that long, not trying to prove anything or make a point here.

Maybe I am the only crazy one on here that changes their oil more often then they should.

Supposedly there is a 0w-20 blend out there. Not worth it considering the wally world price for full synth jugs.

    Ha, here we go.

People really need to stop badgering others for doing a proper oil change interval.

Its been proven time and time again that the majority of people drive in severe conditions. 5k oil change interval is perfectly acceptable and not a waste of money.

But hey, we have an enthusiasts forum that fight against proper maintenance. We even have one guy, who lives in Maine(which happens to be one of the most harshest environments in the country for motor vehicles), who fails to recognize how his driving falls into the severe category. I am not sure I'd take his "expert" advice.

To answer the O.P. original question, I don't recall ever seeing a non synthetic 0w20.

I did a first change at 5k, but will be doing 10k here on out. Our past cars had 10k intervals and I never questioned it once after the initial break in. My bike is a finicky, maintenance sensitive Italian, but 6k intervals using automotive diesel oils are just fine for an engine that brushes the 10,500rpm limiter nearly ever day that I commute on it.

Couldn't say about blended, but conventional oil quality has come a long way so if it meets API requirements for 0W-20 then that's that. My $0.02 is that using synthetic is worth the money anyway. I spent a lot of money to buy my truck why would I cheap out on maintenance? I'd probably re-arrange my budget to spend a little less up front if dropping $50 instead of $25 three times year was a problem.

Thanks, I appreciate the information. My 1st gen would get 5k intervals with conventional and that engine just kept on ticking with no consumption. High tolerance engines found in my ///M cars are very similar to your bike. Those cars would consume oil and with the number of rod bearing failures it was common practice to change religiously. Sure Toyota doesn't have these issues but it seems like a good practice.

I was also the victim to a catastrophic rod bearing failure on my old 2006 Husqvarna TE 510 (MV Agusta era) at 3200 miles. I blame that on poor service intervals (oil changes) by the previous owners. The bike ended up costing too much to fix and it was dumped at a huge loss to me. :(
