So finally hit the 1k mark and called the dealer to schedule an oil change and they refused saying it's bad for the motor and I shouldn't change it until 5k (had nothing to do with toyota care as I explained I would pay out of pocket and why I wanted changed at 1k)

Should I have told them to eat shit and die or did they have any merit to their gibberish?

Cliffsnotes, is changing your oil at 1k miles bad?

Go to another dealer, they will take your money. Or, just do it yourself. No, it won’t hurt to change it early if you want to. I did my first one at 2500.

Toyota recommends oil change @ 10k. Just completed the 5k service, and it was just a fluid top off and tire rotation.

So you guys change it at 5k? I dunno if its urban legends but read about guys changing it at 1k and finding shavings. I don't get how it could hurt the motor changing it so soon

It will never hurt your engine to change the oil. Just make sure its refilled to the proper level...

Find a new dealer or do it yourself like stated above.

That's kinda from back in the day when the machining process wasn't as precise.

Go ahead and change it now for piece of mind it won't hurt anything other than the environment and your wallet. FYI, early oil changes never hurt the car/truck it's just a waste of resources sometimes

Normally shavings are found when the filter and oil havent been changed or when you don't use enough. Changing oil at 5k is the most average and safe practice around.

I changed my oil around 1,000 miles. There were small shavings in the oil filter canister. The small amount of money I spent was worth the piece of mind on a brand new truck.
I also just changed the oil on my mothers 2018 Dodge Charger Daytona at 1,000 miles and found that the factory installed oil filter was slightly loose causing a light oil film in that area.

Maybe if you just rolled off the lot in a brand new 1973 Chrysler Cordoba it would be a great idea, but there really is no need for you to change your oil at 1k. You are just wasting fake dinosaurs.

Hmm, good question. I did love the 360 I had in my old Ram. I got 12mpg highway, city, uphill, downhill, in mud, missing a sparkplug wire, etc. That baby must have purred pushing around the beautiful mass of steel that was the Cordoba. I bet there is still hulking beauties in junkyards that still have not completely rusted to dust.

My favorite thing about those cars is that the advertising agency invented the term "rich corinthian leather" from whole cloth. Nothing to do with Corinth at all.

Everybody reporting finding shavings in their oil filter is basically reporting that their oil filter is functional
