Yea, but you're early enough in the season that you can replant. Later in the season and you would be stuck buying crappy tomatoes from the store.

 

This isn't a Garden but maybe some of you green thumbs can help me out. Keeping plants and trees alive is not something I'm good at.


Info:

Tree; Trovita Orange 24x24 box
Age: Planted on 9/29/2017
Location: Arizona, Phoenix
Mulch when planted: 50% Kellogs Mulch 50% dirt.
Water: 1gal hr drip (x5),22 gallons a week total, slow dripper runs 3x's a week.
Fertilizer: 2 months ago - citrus fertilizer. Can't remember name of it off the top of my head.
Issue: Around the start of May the tree leaves were green and started to droop a bit. Color was still a deepish green. No issues before May and the tree did a great job flowering when it started to heat up. I have tried a very, very, slow drip soak on it for about 4 hours 2 weekends ago during the night. When I checked the soil at that time it was pretty dry for the first 2 inches or so before I soaked it.




I haven't made any adjustments and when I check with my moisture meter (Which doesn't ever seem to work) it says it's "moist" but on the high side or it says "wet" but on the lower side of "wet". I took a wooden dowel and put it down 3ft and let it sit for 10 min. It wasn't soaked but it did water stains. I did the chopstick test in the top soil and it was dryer than the lower soil but not by much. It was dryer than the wooden dowel but they were very close in color. (I didn't get pics). No soil was stuck on either sticks when I pulled them out.

This morning the plant looks horrible. It's curling, yellowing, but not dropping leaves. Moisture is the same. I've added some brown mulch to help keep the top soil moist as it's hitting 110+ temps during the day.





I've had a lot of friends come over and try to think of what's going on but none of us are making any headway. I think it's over watered, but I thought I was over watering my lime tree when I planted it and it almost died as it was dryer than a popcorn fart. Got that watering on the same setup as this orange tree and it's doing fantastic now unlike this orange tree.

I can get more pics of anything suggested, just tell me what you need to see and I'll get to it asap.

 

Anyone here have an aquaponic setup? I am making a small one.

 

I had one for a few years. Warning! A small one will lead to a larger hydroponics one and a larger one ........

 

Thats a good looking system!! Are you only hydroponics? If not how many fish are you using to support those plants?

 

motherF#@#ers. The damn voles got me again last night. I think the heavy rain tripped all of my traps and they destroyed my one tomato plant again. These little bastards are going to die.

 

You need a cat.
Either that or one of those solar repellant things.

 

cat is a no go. looks like i will look for a repellant thing.

We had issues with voles a couple of years ago and tried the solar buzzer thingy and surprisingly it worked. We tried the spike traps before that but they never seemed to be very effective. Didnt use poison because we didnt want our chickens to eat it.

 

yeah, poison is not an option for me either. My dog will eat the voles if he finds them and then get poisoned.

The ultrasonic buzzer things just need to work long enough to get them to move along from my garden.

 

What kind of trap are you using? This trap works good, I did have one mole or something elude the trap, only thing I could do was poison it...finally got it.

my issue isn't moles, these are voles. They are essentially a burrowing field mouse. They dig little half tunnels in grass and will burrow in the ground for nest, so i just had mouse traps out. I only caught 1, and my traps weren't tripped until last nights heavy rain. i also didn't have any damage until then either.

Decided to give up the ghost on one of the potato plants as it dried up. Started to dig around and found this purple beauty.

 

I had talked to the nursery where I got the tree from and they suggested not to test the soil just yet. I live in Az, it's all clay and very expansive but I've had other trees do great in very similar area's. They suggested adding some shade as once it hits 105'ish it seems to just kill the trees fast. Makes sense so I added some shade and changed the watering cycle to what they suggested. Time will tell.

 

This was fun, it felt like I was mining for gold I was so excited, funny. I’m going to try and grow more next season for sure and dedicate more space. Someone mentioned tall buckets. That would be perfect, and would stash away easily too.

Still have several mounds doing their magic though.
