Look around for tamper resistant mounting hardware. I've also seen people use cable locks to lock the tent to the rack. If somebody really wants your tent neither will stop them from taking it, but it'll slow them down a bit? :notsure:

Looking at doing something similar, as I'm a side sleeper also. to @Backcountry chef, what type of foam did you put on top of your stock mattress? and to @GoGoGadget, do you find the memory foam is providing enough support? I will have to go with something other than memory foam is it's too cold up here in Canada and memory foam is known to become very stiff when cold. Thanks guys!

Anyone running the hardshell RTT from Bigfoot Tents? I'm looking at the clamshell styles.

I used the 5/16 - 18 Spanner nuts from McMaster Carr to mount my tent to my rack. Spanner nut on to synch the bracket down, and then lock washer and nylon nut tight against the spanner to prevent from vibrating back out.

Then to mount my rack to the truck bed I used Torx Head Bolts with lock washer and nylon nut on the back in the J-Channel

If you go the Spanner nut route, note that the driver you have to buy along with it you will have to most likely modify as the "throat" of the bit isn't deep enough for the bolt. I cut mine off and drilled a 5/16" hole through it and then welded it to a deep 3/8" drive socket I wasn't ever going to use.

Yes, the combination of the softer memory foam on top of the OEM firm mattress worked well for me. Now I just need a king size sheet to cover it all as the memory foam has that rubbery feeling so as body parts slid out of the sleeping bag it annoyed me.

this is the topper I used.

Ok so update, I hated my mattress so from foambymail.com I ordered 1 inche of mattress Lux foamhq and 2 inches of hd36 foam h. The hq foam is a little higher quality so it should last longer in a RTT. The 2 inch stuff is softer than the 1 so when combined they perform a good dampening system without bottoming our. I weigh aabout 210 and my wife about 140. OMG this is so much more comfortable than the original mattress and cost $160. Memory foam gets hard when it’s cold, and latex is $$$ so this is an excellent solution. HIGHLY recommended and it’s free shipping !

Just curious how hard is that when cold? I understand it's not possible to explain in words. Is it like plywood? :)

VERY hard- I have a sleeping platform in the back of my truck and I got a gel mattress topper. Camped in 36 degree weather and it was like sleeping on a board until you lay on it long enough- then it sinks in but the problem is the surrounding is still hard so you can't roll at all. You're stuck like Han Solo.

I solved this issue with mr. heater. Let the tent warm up for 20 mins before bed and not only is the mattress soft, but the blankets/bag are nice and cozy too.

I’m in L.A. but I had my rack made by @DrWeld from SD. Excellent build!
He built me the exact rack he has on his truck. Check him out if you need any fab work etc.

So do you use the softer material on top and the more firm one below to create a kind of progressive pack? (Sounds like we are talking about other truck parts now, haha)

What products are you guys using to prevent mildew and clean tent after multiple rainy days? I’m airing out tent now and plan on cleaning this weekend.

Can you comment a little further on this 2 foam combo you are using. Why did you use that particular combo? Was it from a recommendation from them?

I was looking at their website and couldn't find "hd36 foam h". I did see:
    HD36 Regular Foam
    HD36 High Quality Foam
    HD36-R Foam - Standard Mattress
    HD36-HQ Foam - Standard Mattress

Do you remember which of these it is?

Are you also using the original mattress too? What is the order of the various layers?

Will they still fold up with the extra pads/foam?

have yet to use it on the tent but i like using Odo-Ban for all cleaning like that. Leaves a good scent, is cheap and a disinfectant.
