How are you mounting your kayaks?

I've been running in circles trying to decide what will be more ideal to mount my 2 kayaks. Roof crossbars? Bed crossbars? No crossbars? Just throw them in bed? I am aiming more towards the Bed crossbars as they seem easy to remove once done using. Any suggestions on types of bed bars I can use that will be compatible with these?

I like keeping things down low. I'd not go with roof racks. Bed rack could be an option, if you use it a lot and need to carry cargo as well.

I take my 12' kayak out just occasionally. So I just throw it in the bed and tie it down. Flag on the back.

 

Tracrac, bought it from a guy on Craigslist that used it to carry kayaks.

It clamps on and off pretty easy, I only put it on occasionally to transport long lumber, like today...by coincidence.

 

I've had good luck using a truck bed extender from Harbor Freight to carry our two kayaks. They are only 10' so they just barely rest on the top of the extender. I stack them and strap them into the bed.

 

i have 12 foot boats and a long bed. i put them in the back of the truck and use one ratchet strap. tailgate up. donesies.

Far and away easiest and fastest way to go about it. I can’t get the rest of my pictures to upload. Search my user name for my past posts on the subject. I think mine is an “extend a truck”. Used for 12’ two person kayak and ‘14 canoe. - Also works great with lumber

Google the Boondocks T-Bone extender.

Nice radius that will allow clearance over uneven terrain.

 

Personally I went with the Yakima Longarm hitch extension. It has several positions that allow it to line up with Bed Height, Decked Drawer height, Top of bed rails (KB Voodoo and similar) and with an add on extension right up to cab height.... I obviously picked it because with Decked Drawers I needed to be at a specific height. I think it’s the best of all worlds, weighs 11 lbs. it’s Aluminum, and is rated at 300 lbs. My boat in the above picture weighs in at 110lbs and is 14ft no issues at all. Definitely worth checking into. IMHO. GOOD LUCK!!!

 

Added the Apex Rack from All Pro Offroad. This worked well, but probably should add some 3-4" spacers in order to slide the yak forward a bit more...

 

Just throw in bed and strap down.

 

Had Three 10-footers in the bed this past weekend (had to leave the tonneau folded up to the back glass), and have had as many as seven strapped in the bed (well maybe stacked upward but still in the bed, no racks or anything) coming back from the take-out.

I have some of the cheap ones from Amazon, alot like your link ebay ones. They worked fine for the roof of my 4runner. I am in the process of building a custom carrier for my bed that will use them. Like others have said, I prefer them low.

 

Probably depends a little bit on how big your kayaks are. I have a prinsu rack, and use yakima cradles for my sea kayak. My kayak is relatively long (17'), but it's light (wood+fiberglass). So putting it up there is a breeze. My wife's kayak is shorter (14') and heavier (plastic)... and I put it on j-bars, and it's not easy at all. The cradle and j-bars are left over from when I had a narrower car, but I might look for a 2nd set of cradles for her boat.

A bed rack at the height of the cab with the cradles would be much easier.
