Late oil change?

So what exactly can happen to my engine (or entire truck) if I don't change my oil on time? Lets say I post-pone the oil change for about 5k miles after its really do (change at 10k miles instead of 5k miles)

Nothing immediate most likely...but you will hurt your engines lifespan.
Some folks swear by a filter change every 5K and oil changes 10 to 15K. If you are going to start custom making oil change intervals you need to invest in oil analysis on a regular basis to ensure you are not approaching a component failure.

All that being said- "Why??" is a great question...

 

All lubricants break down over time. This is due to heat, pressure, contamination and so on. When a vehicle has a recommended interval or a system to alert you to change a fluid, it is at a point where the fluid will still have some life left to it. In other words it can still do its job but is nearing the end of its useful life.

If we decide to overshoot those times we risk damage and shorter service life from the vehicle.

The above is the basic concept. There are always variables and opinions. Unless one really knows what they are doing, it is best to stick to known suggestions for best practice.

That solely depends on the oil you have there....
Some oils are good for 90K
Some barely last 2k
So Unless you have one that is made for extended drain you should change oil sooner

Send a sample of your oil off after 5K miles and then decide after you get the results back.
BTW, My 2002 2.4l owner's manual calls for 7.5k oil change under normal use. 5k interval for heavy duty use.
I change it every 5k because old habits are hard to break.

 

IF it's synthetic oil 10k is easy to get by with. I change my mobile 1 on my Jeep GC every 8-10k, which equates to twice a year for me. 266k on that engine with no problems. Had the head gasket replaced at 230k miles and the shop said the engine looked pristine for the miles.

 

That is an extreme case. 60k on the same oil. Fuck me up the goat ass.

I tried to kill my old toyota corolla by not changing the oil, 40 000 km and it still wouldn't give, so i drove it 200 km with no oil cap, still worked fine. But I still would not recommend going past your regular oil change

 

Yeah, condensation is rough when you run it a bit then let it sit for long periods of time. My wife's car is the same... she MIGHT drive it 5000 miles per year but I still change the oil twice a year. Cheap insurance...

 

I think maybe someone forgot to change their oil at 5 k and now they are at 10 k and realized they haven't changed it yet .

 

if you have engine failure and you cant prove you changed your oil every 5,000 miles it will void your warranty. i take a picture of my speedo oilfilter oil and reciept every time i change my oil.. all in one picture.
