Dealership refusing to do 1k mile oil change

    This was the rationale I heard when I bought my first new car (2010 VW GTI). It was recommended not to change the oil at 1k miles because the factory break-in fill is different than the normal fill. I'm not sure if this applies to Toyota, or if it was even true for my VW, but that would be my concern, not shavings in the filter. I'm at 4k miles on my '18 and plan to do my first oil change at 5k.

    Those concerned about removing metal particles caused by break-in: are you planning to change your transmission or diff oil at 1k miles?

    They don't use "Break In" Oil any longer, Honda was the last Manufacturer holding onto that.

    And my sis had a hard time getting Honda to change hers at 5K. If it hadn't been a year old, they said "Wait 'til 10K".

    As stated by others, oil and other technology has come a long way the 70’s. Really no need to change your oil so soon, even at 5k intervals unless you’re keeping that poor sucker above 4K RPM 90% of your driving. If you have the money, do it. Having a peace of mind goes a long way in trusting your rig. Just think of all the grandmas and naive people who know nothing and strictly follow their owners manual. Damn cars are still running.

    I wish Toyota still had the system they put on their 3.0L V6’s in the ‘90s, where the head gaskets leaked so much oil, that all you had to do was add a litre of oil every other month and throw a new filter in once and a while. So easy!

    I will do my first change at 5k instead of the recommended 10k, but it will be a years worth of mileage, so I wont wait any longer.

    I'm not so sure about this. Oil reports done on the FRS/86 just a couple years ago by Blackstone were showing higher moly in the factory fill.

    I'm with the other guys. Leave it and change it a little early, but near the recommended schedule. I did mine at 5k.

    I always change the oil on new vehicles within the first couple thousand miles. I also like to change out diff fluids earlier than the manual calls for. Then settle into a pretty normal schedule according to the manual. It probably won't HURT your engine to leave that synthetic oil in there for 10k but I know for a fact that (if done properly) you are NOT hurting anything changing the oil early. That's silly.

    There is no reason to change your oil at 1,000 miles, or any earlier than 10,000 miles. It's not going to hurt anything but it's a waste of money, and oil. That dealership was essentially saving you money. Sure they could've done it, and taken your money, and laughed as you drove away, but they didn't want to waste your money.

    Toyota engineers wouldn't say it's fine if they didn't really believe it was. They don't want to do warranty work or replace an engine due to "bad" oil anymore than you want to.

    change the oil at the recommended OCI 10k miles in this case, if there should be a breakdown due to metal shavings(not realistic) then youll have the 100k mile powertrain warranty there to give you a brand new engine, which we all know will never happen because there will never be an issue.

    I disagree with the people suggesting going to another dealer... sounds like the one refusing to change the oil knows that an oil change at 1k miles is virtually pointless and a waste of money. Seems like that dealership's service department actually cares about their customers and their money.

    if I was so worried about metal shavings destroying my engine I would be under my truck changing the oil out, instead of posting my contaminated oil obsession online
