Thanks. Are you talking faced foam board? I looked into that, and the kits, but on these doors it would have been a huge PITA. From what I've seen on several videos, faced/reflective insulation can be a 20 degree difference.

The method I'm using is quiet, clean, easy, and cheap. Quiet is good because this door is right under the kids room, and I can make incremental progress at night after he goes to bed.

Tonight I put on the smoked UV 80% window tint on one upper panel, which will help with heat and aesthetics from the outside. Don't really want to see tinfoil and foam sticks from the back yard. o_O

I used 1” on my door. The kits were a joke. You can buy the 4x8 sheet of the foil backed styrofoam for less than half the price and it cuts like drywall (score and snap). Give it an extra 1/4 for a snug fit and it made a huge difference for my garage door which faces west and gets all the afternoon sun.

Yes, I believe that's what he used. I could see where that would be pain in the ass with the panels on your doors. on this fix, quick and cheap.

That's basically what I heard too about the kits.

I think I used 4 sheets for my two car garage door. They were about $12 each. So for less than $50 I did the full length. The kit was $57 each and I'd need two kits. As reference I also did my ceiling in the garage using the foam board. It isn't perfect but does a helluva lot to reduce the radiant heat coming from the ceiling. It's a vaulted roof with exposed framing. I didn't want to use batt insulation and I didn't want to finish with drywall. As an added bonus, the white panels (foil side towards ceiling) did a lot to reflect light in there and brightened up the space.

Yeah, the kits are retarded for that purpose. I think for this one door with reflectix and the pipe insulation battens, I'm out $50. Deal.

Sounds like you have a truss roof detached garage? I was about to do that at my old place:

Correct (forgot the correct terminology). I face attached the foam boards to the ceiling joists using long screws and fender washers to prevent the screw heads sinking into the foam. Quick and clean way to cool the garage noticeably. Even as I was up there on the ladder, I could feel the difference when I added a new board. I also added an exhaust fan at the front and rear of the garage the forces cross ventilation. Basically two window box fans that I have wired to a switch and I can run when I'm working in there and it's hot. This is in addition to an attic fan that's on a thermostat that I honestly feel is completely useless in the open/exposed space so I unplugged it.

LOL. Yeah I had two windows in there, and I'd open those, one with a box fan blowing in on me, and the other open for exhaust (sometimes). A second fan blowing in and having it all push out the gable vents would have been a simple improvement. There were two louvered gable vents at either end of the roof, and I had found an abandoned gable exhaust fan with thermostatic switch in the attic of the house. I was going to shroud than in to the gable facing the alley...almost got around to it before we sold.

    Oh you're fucked now.
Rule number 1, take all your hopes and dreams and put them in that box over there. Now take all your money and put it in that other box over yonder. Now wait for shit to break or generally piss you off every day. Then use the box over yonder to unfuck it.

Painted doorknobs usually look like crap. IMHO Can you give them a quick acid bath to clean them up?

There’s a little chrome left in restroom so brush nickel will match that better than orb or ant brass

Thanks, I feel terrible for them, but they are lucky compared to most, they at least have a vacation home on the island that is now their new permanent home.

Most others are not so lucky and literally lost everything. Kapoho was a small coastal community, very tight nit group, roughly 200+ homes. All have been buried under 30 - 40 feet deep lava. The bay that was there is completely gone, the big island now officially has a new coastal area. This map shows that roughly 90% of the Kapoho Hawaii area is gone and completely covered in new lava fields. The difficulty there will be power and other utilities, for homes that do survive this, it will be months before any service is returned and potentially a year before roads can be carved out/added as the lava has to completely cool before they will touch it.

A lot of these homeowners that have been affected by this have spent years building these homes. Hawaii is a different kind of animal, there are not simply lumberyards and homedepots on every corner, a lot of these families have made working on their homes and improving their properties part of their life more so than a lot of us do on the mainland. Just to have it completely wiped out, they will never be able to rebuild where the lava has hit, this isn't like a forest fire, flood, hurricane, tornado etc where you can start over on the same piece of land and in a few years it is returned to some of it's glory. This land will be rock for the next 100+ years, paradise is lost.

Just crazy ,but those islands are volcanos. You just never think stuff like that is going to happen . I’m sure California will be gone someday !
