I am hands on, so I decided today to rotate my tires. Back in November I had a flat tire, so for the time being I put the spare tire as my main, but had the local mechanic shop swap rims. Well, they put all the lug nuts too tight on the one tire! I had to use a cheater bar for the others, but the wheel lock socket stripped out.

I plan on going back to the mechanic and having him take it off if he can. If not, is there anything I can do to get it off without paying Toyota assloads of money?

I used to make good money removing wheel locks for the wheel store next to my old business. Get a large nut from the hardware store, something that takes a 3/4 or 7/8 socket. then weld it to the wheel lock with a mig gun . I used to use a toilet paper cardboard tube around the nut to keep the spatter from hittitng the wheel. The weld doesnt have to look good just be strong...Be sure to turn the nut as soon as your done welding the heat really helps..

Do you have any information about what brand wheel lock it is? Do you have paperwork for them? You might be able to call the manufacturer with a model or serial number and they might be able to send you a new wheel lock socket. Just a thought....

The wheel locks came with the truck from Toyota.

Hammering a socket won't do anything. It's a round nut, so there is nothing to grab. It wouldn't be so bad if the lug nut pattern wasn't so shallow.

Looking online, it appears they are made by McGard. I will contact them tomorrow to see what they suggest.

I think what THE END is saying is find a socket that won't quite fit and hammer the crap out of it to get it on the lug.

So you stripped the key itself? I did the same using the crappy lug nut tool that comes with our trucks when I was standing on it. You have to be very careful with the McGuard wheel locks, they are very easy to brake. Taking them off requires equal pressure on the wheel lock itself, or you will strip the key.

To get it off, you have 2 options. Order a new key from McGuard for $10. Or have a wheel/tire shop get it off by using a special tool for stripped lug nuts.

I work at a tire shop. The "lock removal kit" is just some assorted sockets that you hammer on. Try it man, just don't hit your wheel.

yeah the guys that installed my lift put ALL mine on too tight! i actually broke the socket while using a cheater. luckily a tire shop nearby had a lock socket that was almost identical and ended up doing the job:) I had to give it some TLC to get it off. i was also able to cut off the end with a hacksaw ans save the broken socket, to some extent anyways! I don't even know why they were ALL locks. I asked for black lug nuts and that is what i got.
I will soon be in the business for normal lug nuts and i will have a plethora of pinatas...i mean wheel locks. I guess for people i dont like i could install wheel locks on their tires :) that would be going too far i guess.

Shouldn't I have gotten 4 regular lugs when I bought my truck? I can't seem to find them. My Mazda 3 came with 4 spare lugs.
