@Loco38SUP Do you go to the Kenmore range? I really like the walkthrough range and 3D shoots in the summer.

I go to the Kenmore range once in a while. Their outdoor practice range is good for sighting in new equipment out to 60 yards. I’ve also done their 3-D walk through. Its a short course but fun to shoot. I havent had a chance to attend any of their 3D events yet.

The range I visit more is at Nock Point in Mountlake Terrace. Have you been there?

Yup, I know the Nock Point. That's where I got my bow and extra gear. Shot there for a while and its great for the winter. Guess I like shooting farther distances and being outside if the weather is good. Let me know next time your thinking of heading to the Kenmore range

Just an.....observation. I have a QAD on my new Hoyt HyperForce. It's a cable driven drop away. Nice rest, micro-adjustable. Keeps my Slick Trick tipped arrows grouping nicely out to forty yards. My son's bow, a Mission Riot, 62#, 28" draw is equipped with a WB rest. He shoots the same arrows as I do, except his are tipped with Magnus Stingers. As long as he does his part, his groups are as tight as mine.

Now, with that said, I have been watching a series on Youtube called "Born and Raised Outdoors". There is a fifty part series where this group of guys go on DIY elk hunts throughout Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. During the first couple of days in the Colorado hunt, the one hunter had his bow strapped to his pack. He got hung up in a branch. Later he checked is bow. The drop away rest cable pulled out from the rest. He played hell getting it fixed. There is a lot to be said for zero moving parts in a WB.

You do have to keep an eye on them. Had a friend hunt in the rain one afternoon and it got really cold that night, next day his QAD was frozen and would not operate until it thawed. I used a TM Hunter for years and it was pretty much trouble free but far from being contained.

I have a Trophy Taker "Shakey Hunter" on my Mathews LX and an NAP1000 (similar to a TM) on my Mathews FeatherMax. That rest is almost 19 years old and still works perfectly. Blazers or Feathers, rest is easy to tune for no fletching contact. When did we start to think we "need" a $150.00 rest? And yeah, I'm guilty of it.

So, I was off yesterday and decided to shoot a few arrows. After a dozen or so shots I decided to shoot my 100 grain Slick Tricks. I noticed some wonky arrow flight so I thought I'd shoot some bare shafts just to double check the tune. Holy crap!! Bare shafts were doing the funky chicken the whole way (20 yards) to the target. Checking my bow, either my center serving as slipped or the strings have stretched as my nock point is now about 3/16" above level. Never would have thought I'd get that much stretch after two months of shooting, especially with a new bow with supposedly higher quality pre-stretched strings. It's also possible I'm underspined on my arrows. So instead off having this squared away before summer ( I have a ton of honey do's) I'm back to ground zero. *Sigh*

Moral of the story? Bare shaft tune prior to shooting broadheads.

I totally agree. I can't wrap my head around the cost since I got back into archery. That and all these dials and stuff. Does everybody that has a bow want to hit stuff out to 60+ yards now? I'd say that the major sight companies have anwered that question for us.

It's cool to see innovation though, I'm just an old guy set in his ways haha!

The Truglo is fine, came on the bow. I took all the pins off but one, so been thinking of getting a proper single pin sight.

That's a interesting experiment. How much do you shoot a month? Right now, I'm probably shooting at least two days a week. I just had my bow tuned, was wondering how long a tune lasted.

From now until the end of archery season I’ll shoot 4-5x a week. Typically the only months I don’t shoot are January and February. I had strings and cable replaced on my Mathews LX two years ago. Nothing moved. Shot bare shafts thru it yesterday, hit right with my FPs.

Bare shaft is a great way to see how well the arrow is coming off the bow with no other external influences, like fletching. Too many “pro” shops paper tune at 3 feet, get a bullet hole and state “see how easy this bow tunes. You’re good to go”

Then when you’re shooting broadheads at forty yards and you’re hitting 7 or 8” to the right, they’ll recommend mechanicals to cover a poorly tuned bow. Not bashing mechs. I shoot them. Paper tuning is only the beginning to tuning a bow, not the end.

I was always surprised how much stock strings stretched. After battling with my peep sight always moving on me I finally switched to Winners Choice strings. My peep sight hasn’t moved at all since the change.

I like shooting out past 60. Not at game, though, just at targets. I am not sure if that is just a product of the current archery environment or if I genuinely like it.

I had some winners choice strings on my old Bear. Great strings!

Long distant shots are cool, there’s nothing like watching your arrow carve through the sky and thump a target at 100 yards. :)
