I think most manufacturers build in a decent buffer because they know people will push the limits.

I agree, its a rare occurrence (hauling tile for my dad was probably the heaviest load), just surprised. I always assumed payload was just for the bed lol

My Tacoma says total payload is 1,000 lbs max on the door jamb. It is really low, and on top of that you have to count passengers' weight which brings it down even further. I think it's more the brakes and how a truck would handle emergency maneuvers that these maximums are based on vs anything really breaking on the truck.

Right, I'm sure the suspension and frame can handle it in the short run, but what if you have an emergency braking situation? "Making it there" and actually being safe are 2 different stories.

Most 1/2t trucks and below have miserable payloads. Ram 1500 eco diesel CCSB, 4x4 for example, after adding 4 adults you have around 300-400lbs left. (1330lbs total)

Tacomas are selling well because they have upped production and consumers are actually able to find the truck they want.

Oh I agree, not saying I would overload stuff like my father has. Braking and handling would be my biggest worry.

i had an 09 ridgeline and ran it 5 yrs 155k. no issues. I test drove the new model and although i believe it is the best riding and lot more comfort i just could not get over the looks. To me looks means a lot too. I didnt think the 1st gen looks were great but i did like it. Dont know who designed the looks but i couldnt do it o the 2nd gen

That's pretty much the same for just about every car, suv, and motorcycle also. It is surprising how little you can actually carry compared to the space available, esp in the bloated sizes that we have these days. Then, you see someone flying down the road with their suspension and tires sagging. . .

It doesn't really stop with road vehicles either. Short of actual cargo aircraft, most general aviation aircraft have similar limitations. At least there, the operators get training on proper loading. It is funny though. One of the business streams for our company is approving the installation of flexible ferry fuel tanks. The number of folks that ask us about installing a 100gal tank in four place aircraft is just hilarious. Most GA aircraft don't even have rated floors or tie downs. Thankfully, our tank supplier has a 25gal version that uses the existing seat belts. The most challenging aspect when tie downs are available is coming up with an approveable pattern for the ratchet straps.

We had one guy with a Mooney doing an around-the-world trip that didn't believe us and just flew with the tank unapproved. Thankfully, he had no problems. There are these kind of folks everywhere.

Just got done with a trip to anaheim and I hardly saw any Tacomas. Rather, a butt load of full size trucks like f250s and such. I'm wondering if maybe I'm in the wrong place where tacomas live? What's also worrying is that I hardly saw any 4runners...I love my tacoma but I'm hoping that it doesn't get discontinued due to the full size market.

I see Tacos and 4Runners all OVER the Phoenix metro area. All the time. I wouldn't worry too much.

If I didn't get a mid size truck and was going to go full size I would get the new Ford F150.

I'm good, I was a Honda guy for years and my last was the CR-V EX - and I'm all set. Terrible interior, god awful arm rests -WTF, terrible AWD again WTF, and on the Ridgeline I would not dare to yank someone out stuck in the snow - no even a front tow hook..... No thanks, I wanted a real 4WD vehicle.

I go visit my parents in Iowa, it's the same thing, nothing but domestic full size trucks. Here in Colorado though, they are all over the place, 4 runners as well.

the new ridgelines have awd though and they have the different modes you can choose from for the different weather for better traction.

But not a true 4wd, right, just a AWD? I'd just get a Subie if that was my market
