Yea mine is like $2,500. And they'll only increase it by $250 at a time. My mom's is outrageous the limit on that. She had to tell Discover to not raise it anymore

 

The extent of my prepping is 20 gallons of water in jugs so I can flush my toilet and $5000 in cash in my gun safe. Of course the cash is more for some random Craigslist purchase I may need to make at any given point like a crazy deal I come across.

 

Not even a stash of beer squirreled away somewhere?

 

I only care because I put everything on it and try to keep my utilization below 10%.

 

Right. I only use it for gas. So its from $250 to $400 a month

 

I have food, gas, and just about all bills so I'm $800-$1000/month.

If I pay something big, like car insurance for the year, I'll make a separate payment ahead of the statement for it, but in general I wait for the statement to cut.

Nothing illogical with that! I would do it too if I was motivated enough.

 

Is that around what it should be? I honestly didn't even think of this.

 

I've always heard you should never go above 30%, being below 20% is better, and being in the 5-10% range is optimal.

 

So you'd be all set for at least a couple of days, then.

Even just keeping enough around for a week is a good idea. Doesn't take up much space and doesn't cost a lot of $$ for shelf-stable food for that period of time. Water for that stretch is the biggest obstacle, but even a few of those 2.5 gallon water jugs go a long way.

It is crazy that credit utilization is almost equal to payment history in terms of importance in determining credit score. Learn something new everyday! Now I should go pay off my balance...

 

According to Discover (since you get a monthly credit score) my revolving utilization is at 11%
