What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Monte doesent Rock crawl though. He doesent usually put himself is situations where he’s so bound up double locked that he has to carry 4 or 5 spares lol. I love that my cvs are the breaking point. They can take some abuse for sure, but when I snap a cv, I bow my head and take a winch.
The rear axles are comparable to a Dana 35, and the fronts are maybe slightly better than a Dana 30

If your going long travel (not for you Monte, for the other guy) by the time you regear, get an arb, and buy chromoly shafts...just get a ford 9” lol. Then you have a beefier platform to work off of no?

 

yep. Very true. Sort of. If you live in an area where finding the right affordable housing is do able and diff is do able. I don't. So For me it's a custom build and is a 4-5k build. Plenty of folks have built a 9'' rear end though for under 2k. All depends on where you are located though honestly.

I'll end up there at some point.

 

hmmmmm can probably get a Ford 9" for free from taking it off my brothers bronco but that's stealing lol

 

also, i indeed havn't put myself in those situations as of late. But wouldn't mind. That said, when my front diff nuked at 40mph and my CVs didn't even so much as chip a spline..i still think id end up nuking the diff first sadly, even with the ARB. Or the stub shaft at least.

 

Honestly, I think with a trussing tacoma/tundra/t100 housing and an ARB in a an 8.4 diff taco, you'll be fine in most situations. If you link it...no. But for SUA LT should be fine. If Jason of all people never destroyed his then I don't think most will. Cause Jason fuckin beat on his truck constantly harder then a lot of people will ever even once. Im hard on my shit, but not at Jason's level yet.

 

Cant really find a 16 I like, thinking of the stealth 6s in 3.5bs.

Dont plan on tundra brakes, mine are enough atm. I do like the sound of c load tires, feel like it would help the kings tremendously. And most 16s im finding are d load around 60lbs. 15s more like in the 50s

 

That's true I have a 8" rear thanks to the e-locker but ilI'swap it out for a air locker. Nothing wrong with a e locker just don't like the 1/2 turn to engage or disengage

17” is better imo, good mid ground. Not so big so you don't get any tire but still big enough you have good looking rims

 

I haven't looked much yet, but is ARB the way to go for a 4.56 locker?

 

I run the e locker rear on my tacoma crawler with 37s and have had it wedged many times where I thought for sure I would break a shaft or the 3rd and haven't had any problems. Even with being harder on it lately with lots of skinny pedal.

I am building a 9 in though and they are almost twice the cost to build especially of your going 35 spline because you need a new 3rd member housing which are not cheap. Figure 2200-2500 for a 9 in 3rd member with all new parts with an arb from ecgs or ruffstuff or the likes. I got mine for a screaming deal at the show but waiting for a housing now.

Imo the e locker will hold up to 37s on tacomas and 40s on lighter rigs without full stupid on and knowing when to get out of it but can take it a little. So I say run it.

 

if you run 40s on a tacoma axle, youd have to be so cautious you're limiting the capabilities of the rig. The toy axle is just not meant to push a tire like that imo

 

Good to know but go look at 90% of toyota rock crawlers. Most running toyota axles on 40s and 42s with no issues. Super strong axles with minimal money and combine it with dual cases, proper axle gears and a small motor like the 22re or 3rz and you'll never have problems. Maybe with the 3.4 If you aren't careful but still plenty of people do it. I know the internet says it won't work but a lot of people do it and it works and run hard the hardest of the hard trails.

 

I'm still trying to figure out how I bent a shaft on 33s....
