Rear diff leak

while underneath my truck yesterday I noticed it has developed a leak where the drive shaft goes into the rear diff. What’s going to have to be replace to make this stop leaking?

Looks like a leaky pinion seal. Gonna have to take that sucker apart and replace it. It's not a small job.

 

Rear end pinion seal. My Jeep has the same issue and I’m going to assume that’s what it is. Hopefully no bearing issue but that’s my .02.

Haven’t took one out of a taco but it’s pretty simple from what I did. Mark everything on the driveshalf and yoke as well u-joint and rear end nut. Pull straps off u-joint, swing aside driveshalf proped on something, take rear end nut off, propbably torqued to hell and back, then remove the seal that sits in it, then repeat.

Edit: Before you put seal in rtv where seal sits and put gear oil on rubber seal so it’s lined and not dry.

Before you do anything make sure the pressure release valve on top of the differential pushes up and down. If it is rusted shut it won't move and the pressure builds up causing a leak. Many times replacing or cleaning the valve stops the leak.

I did do the rear diff mod last year, and I did just notice the where I located it the breather was slightly moved and pushed shut. However at this point, it's probably still safe to assume the seal is bad? I'll see what happens in a couple days.

 

Yeah I would make sure the breather mod is working and then take some brake cleaner and spray the area to clean it up. Then monitor for a leak.
