If you’re serious and you’ve never been under the hood of a vehicle, allow me give you some advice. I’m a 60 year old electrical engineer that can pretty much fix anything. The only job I won’t tackle Is the one that’s just not worth my time. Although neither were inclined, I raised my son and daughter to know their vehicles. They can name everything under the hood and perform all basic maintenance. Flat tires, headlight bulbs, batteries, fluid levels, oil/filter changes, et al, are no problem. They’ve both thanked me for it as the years pass.

This is what you should concentrate on before you worry about modifications. Become proficient with your vehicle. Learn what things are and how they work. Learn how to change your oil (even if you only do it once). Flush your radiator...check your hydraulic fluid levels...replace a bulb or two. Then it’s time to mod.

Just simple advice from an old man. Take it for what it’s worth.

    Regards,

    Bryan

That would be great, except I do not have anybody to show me these things. I wish.

In the meantime, I would like to get this speaker upgrade done.

No one showed me, either. I saved my money and bought a shop manual. I studied and learned. Today, it’s all available online.

It’s worth the investment of your time.

If you are truly that inexperienced with very basic things such as disconnecting the battery terminal, you might consider having a local car audio shop do the installation for you. While pretty basic stuff, prying panels, getting panels back in correctly, working in tight places and dealing with stubborn connectors can make this project more than it seems for the neophyte.

Lots of folks think “Oh, it’s just 12vdc. That can’t hurt anything.” That twelve volts can supply a shitload of current when shorted. Having a battery overheat and rupture due to a hard short isn’t the beginning of a great day.

So if it is as simple as removing the black plug from the battery with a socket wrench, as in the video I just posted above, I don't see why I can't do it myself. Even though I have no mechanical skills (Have never opened a hood), it doesn't seem too hard.

    What am I missing?

Turn left (counter clockwise) to loosen
    Turn right (clockwise) to tighten

    Some people don't know that.

On a side note, I did not think the tweeters were worth $100

I agree. The 4 door speakers were $135. Two tiny tweeters were $94 for me. They should be about $30-35. But OEM that's why.

Tacoma hoods are pretty heavy and you need to hoist it with one arm while you stand up the hood rod and place it in the appropriate notch on the underside of the hood. That of course is after releasing the hood latch with the pull lever in the cabin and then sticking your fingers in the small gap that is presented at the nose of the hood and manipulating the secondary hood latch.

I only mention this because you said you've never done this and it's not as simple as opening your refrigerator door.

The tweeter mod can be done without disconnecting the battery...at least I did. The guy in the video is covering is bases and also his ass for litigious reasons (i can only assume). The rest of the video is spot on.

I had a local audio shop put in an all digital design system. D class 6.5 component system with custom brackets in the front. DD co-ax rear speakers, self contained LE-S06 6.5 sub in the rear. All powered by an Audio Control Amp D-6.1200, includes a separate sub woofer control. The whole system including the install was about $1200. It is all controlled through the OEM deck.

Has anyone done the tweeter mod with non-plug and play speakers? What wires need to be spliced into?

How tight are you going to torque the battery terminal when you reinstall it? It's not as simple as it seems. It takes some experience to learn how tight is right.

Snug, don't over tighten. Grab and try to move when you think it's tight. You don't want it moving. And don't let the negative wire get close to the positive.

    all tore up already
Did this last night and big difference. Took about 15 minutes all together, recommend not using a pocket knife to pry plastic parts though I dont think I really needed a pry tool after removing a pillar bolt covers.

Non JBL radio spent a good half its life as max volume, now really not comfortable listening to music much over 50 and much better clarity even max'd. Worth the 95 bucks for sure

Me too. I did the Subaru tweeters too plus all four doors. It sounds way better now. Thanks for the tip.

Did you disconnect the battery before putting in the tweeters?

I did. I also tested the tweeter after install on each side before buttoning it up to make sure I didn’t have to rip everything apart again. Not necessary but safe and if I made a mistake I would have to go back again.

I had a full set and to be honest they come in handy. I’ve broken a lot of tabs of interior parts with and without these interior pullers. It’s definitely doable without it if you have the golden touch.
