Looks like a jack to me thats been fabbed into the bumper to swing down from the swingout.

 

Well, you got me curious. Is it TSJE on this page, but black?

Then I looked a bit more. This one looks interesting and is 12V - just plug it into your existing wiring back there, or into your tow hitch? Probbably couldn't use the mounting plate (you'd have to fab your own, further up the shaft).

 

that all looks like a big heavy pita extra annoying thing to pack around for little merit. haha

 

Mike's worried about his swingout falling off though (bending, really). If he could weld the jack on to a pivot at the end of the swingout, so it rotated 90° for stowage (parallel to his Hi-Lift), it wouldn't be that hard to transport, I think...and small from an overall weight perspective.

But, I don't know if there's room to fit it there...

Yeah, it looks like a threaded strut of some sort. The only problem I see with this type of design is, it won't move as the suspension of the truck moves when you're climbing in or out. That would potentially put a pretty large upwards load on the pivot point, possibly a lot more than just letting the swingout hang.

I think a gas strut of some sort with some give to it would be much better suited to this idea.

There isn't. The lower are is tucked too tight to the bumper.

Plus moutning anything else to the swing out will just add more weight and stress to it while its closed.

I don't think it'll bend, I mean, i know it sags already but its not going to come off. It would be better to try and reinforce the spindle even more rather than adding a jack. Thats just adding more weight and not really fixing the problem.

Though clearances are so tight Im not sure you could do much to it, plus I already gusseted the shit out of the spindle anyways.

Plus I think something as simple as an old pair of crutches found for cheap. Then cuting one up and using the extendable middle section and making that swing down like you're saying would suffice for that.

 

You could say that about lots of things guys have on their trucks.

All the cool kids have ADS coilovers with resis on their swingouts.

 

I don't think its actually attached, but I have posted in his build thread and asked about it.

Looks like way more than I need. Was looking for a simplified version of those types of devices.

This is a concern. Would be cool if it was pressurized. Maybe like a nitrogen charged strut.

Dude, the bumper is awesome but it looks like it will take quite a bit of restructuring to prevent the spindle from flexing when the arm is extended with full weight on it.

 

Im not reacting. I know its an issue, its an issue with mine as well. I tried building yours in a way so it wouldn't be an issue like mine. Alas, I failed.

Part of the problem is you have upwards of 65-70lbs in fuel on the very end of a what..5' or 4'? arm when you have both cans filled. Thats a LOT of weight with a lot of leverage. Im not sure much can be done with the design of the bumper overall due to it being so slim and trim.

Adding the arm will help a bit, but Dan points out that with no give it could be problem itself. Though I think if you just support the arm a bit and don't make it flat, the steel is going to flex enough it'll be fine with just a fixed jack thingy, whatever it is the guy in the photo has.

 

If you put a stand under the swing-out you could also put jack stands or something under the rear of the truck to keep the suspension from compressing when you get in and out. Would also make the whole truck more stable. But that's even more crap you would have to carry with you.

 

most of us carry jackstands actually. However, digging them out for camp setup...nah haha

 

Agreed on all points except about the part of you failing. I certainly don't look on this as a failure.

It is a lot a weight that is leveraging on the spindle, just want to get it a little support when it is extended. An adjustable height support that has some give for when the suspension moves a little (climbing in and out of the tent) seems like it might be a viable solution.

 

How's it going everybody? My name is Charlie. Currently living near Grand lake, CO. Going to be moving end of the month. Been looking into Montana and possibly Wyoming. Wife and I really liked Pinedale when we stayed there on our way to Washington. Are there any other towns that are near lakes/mountains that we should look into?
