1st gen suburban gas tank install

Thanks for the tip. I need one that isn't as long because I bobbed my bed and shortened the frame. It looks like all the 70s Chevys had rear tanks.

 

That makes sense. I wonder if a small tank that normally goes the length of the car turned side ways would fit?

 

I will have to do some checking and see what I can come up with. The idea is solid!

 

I saw your plans in the "What did you do to your 1st gen tacoma" (or whatever it's called). That's some exciting stuff.

 

Only thing I found before I did mine was a guy using a Izuzu trooper tank. I think his thread said it was 12 gallons. Prob Google trooper Tacoma gas tank and it will come up.

 

That might be the Expeditions West Taco.

Also Baja Taco has one but doesn't go into detail on it.

I couldn't find anything in CA regarding adding a fuel tank. It passed smog 2x with no issues too.

When people ask I tell them it's a DOT compliant tank...which it is.

 

Planning on doing the same thing, but with a GM15A 25gal tank out of a 73-81 'Burb.

 

Please document here. One thing I would suggest adding is a 2nd fuel gauge for the 2nd tank, how else will you know its filled/full?

 

I added one with mine. Just need a Chevy/gmc gauge from any parts house and it will work. It reads full/empty based on ohms so just match to whatever brand of vehicle you got the tank from.

I don't, it's been a few years since I did it but if I remember correctly it's only 3 wires. Power and ground for the pump and one wire from the sending unit of the pump to the gauge.

Plan on a gauge just like OPs on A pillar mount. If I win the lotto (that I don't play) I'll get a SC and a boost gauge too


@BossFoss how much suspension travel between full and empty with the tank? I know you have heavier spring rate leafs. Curious if you have a ton of take when empty and bro lean when full.

 

I have more rake empty than I would prefer, but it sits nicely with weight. No bro lean.


Probably sits an inch or two higher than the pic with no weight.

Do you notice a difference in how it drives between full and empty? Seems like that much weight that far back would throw the balance off, but maybe not noticeable unless you are jumping it...

 

I have my aux tank gauge zip ties below the hand brake location on my 1st gen. I still need to wire in the dash light to it....some day.
