35mm axle nut socket, pry bar and a big fucking hammer to knock it in place (don't go crazy but it usually takes a good whack). Oh and a torque wrench, make sure you torque it to spec...I forget what it is but it should be in the video. Same with the LBJ bolts, I believe those go to 60 ft lbs with blue threadlocker.

Axle nuts are fun. When I got my front differential off a rust bucket 1996 4Runner Limited at the Pick-n-Pull, I couldn’t even get past removing the CV axle. Since there were no tires or a hard solid surface, I couldn’t get any leverage on my breaking bar to remove the axle nut since the rotor kept spinning.

I have a picture of it somewhere, but what I did was get one of those wheel jack stands the yard uses to hold up the cars, and shove it under the front wheel wells. I inserted 3/4 socket extension into the vents of the rotors and locked it on the wheel jackstand. Boom. Axle nut came right off.

I am so happy Toyota decided to use dust caps. That rust bucket of a 4Runner had Swiss Cheese for a frame and for steering knuckles. The dust shields on the brakes crumbled when I touched it.

But thanks to that dust shield, the nut was shiny and absolutely pristine.

    There’s that pic.

yeah if I remember correctly I had to sit in my truck and hold the brakes while the other guy got the axle nut loose, to keep it from rotating.

Damn why didn’t I think of that... I could’ve done that before removing the calipers.

well if you're dealing with a truck in a junkyard, there's always the chance that the brakes might not work. But yeah that should be the first go-to effort lol.

I remember taking them off, they were still good and there was fluid in the master cylinder.

Maybe the rear was out though, someone tore the rear end apart for the locking pumpkin.

i did 90. But a 4 ftlb difference isn't going to make a difference really there.

And make sure you have a big enough torque wrench. Mind only goes up to 150 ft-lb and the axle nut needs 176 ft-lb. O'Reilly has the bigguns for loan/rent.

I’m considering getting a shell on my truck and I like to abuse my rig when I take it out most trips. How does the shell hold up when you start mashin and gettin day light under the tires. Have you noticed any stress cracks etc...

True, I had to get another one for that reason. Amazon sells a Tekton torque wrench that goes up to 250 ft lbs for $50, maybe a little less...has great reviews. I've used it a few times and it's been a great tool.

Is it possible to just modify the bumper itself? Also would the width of it match the 01-04 style?

Width would be correct, the 98-00 just use frame horns that jut out firther and don't provide a sound means to attach anything.
