Will I regret getting a 4 cylinder tacoma?

This is why new truck reviews are so gm hard especially when looking into diesels. They always compare fastest time, I want a durability test not who speeds up the mountain with a loaded trailer the quickest

Right? its making me salty because its hurting the market really bad. You cant buy small trucks anymore cause it has to be lifted with mud tires to show the bros. the midsized are basically full sized now. The full sized are just stupid tanks. You cant even get stuff out of the back anymore, SUV's are boats, and cars are slowly being killed off. The motorcycle community was in a rough spot like where we are in the truck segment a few years ago until they realized people don't NEED huge things to enjoy it. Now there's a huge market for sub 400cc bikes.

 

Its almost like people forget what trucks are meant for and they're not race cars lol

 

For some guys they are, while my Toyota's won't ever see the Daytona 500 they'll see plenty of air time in the sand!

 

Yes everything has to be the fastest, I want real work application though, when I get a one ton it will be a Cummins For simplicity and that I can actually get in there and work on it. The day of a simple reg cab is gone, I love my DCSB for wheeling and it’s nice to have the V6. When I hop back in the access 4 banger it’s nice and simple and my 85 is even better. The bikes are an excellent point, when I worked for Kawasaki the 250 was getting a facelift and I would sell them 1000 over msrp before they showed up. Not everyone needs a liter bike or wants the 600, the 300-500 has finally come back to the states and making a great comeback. The fastest bike won’t be the most fun. I’ve had more fun on my Grom utilizing all its power and it’s max potential than when I had my CBR. Look at Ford, they said come 2020 I believe or 2021 they will only car they will make in the states is the Mustang. The rest will be SUVs and pickups

Weak is the wrong word. They are part of a line of super reliable 4 cylinder Toyota engines, basically bulletproof. They aren't powerful and if you're towing a lot then valid argument. But you're going to be hard pressed to find an engine that you can abuse like you can the 4 cylinder. I think the people who feel they lack power aren't revving them high enough, that's always been necessary with 4 cylinders. They don't make power until you get to 2500+ RPM.

 

I think of our 4 cylinders like Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engines. Not powerful, takes abuse when it’s not maintained, gets the job done and reliable.

 

I was recently noticing the badging on full sized trucks. The brand logos on the back end are the size of a dinner plate. It's insane. They used to be about the size of a pack of camel filterless cigarettes.

No need to bash someone else’s choice of what they purchased.
I am more than happy with my choice and have 0 regrets.
I did not buy it to go fast or tow shit.
I did buy it because I don’t need a heavy hauler. I wanted a reliable rig and have achieved that.
I’ve done 120k with it personally and have 164k now.
For me it’s been easy to work on with limited resources.
My only beef is the frame shit but pretty sure it will get a new one next year.
I’ve got nothing to compare to all Toyota’s I’ve had have been 4 banger 5 speeds be it 22r or 22re.
I cruise the Toyota dealerships often to see what they got worries about frame shit.
But I wouldn’t trade it love the truck and I will give it up for a free one at a million miles I hope.

I’m not a fan boy it all depends on what you want.
I want no payments, reliability , easy maintenance.
If I was willing to trade often or lease I believe I’d look elsewhere maybe.
It’s my street queen that’s capable if needed and my DD so I need it to be there when I need it.
7 years with the same rig is a new record for me.

Yep - the Model 7513 in my signature signifies that it's a utility package. The utility delete made is easy to install dog platform on the driver's side that provides a hiding place for my tools.

I'm happy. The truck is paid off.

 

Same here.... This 1.5 turbo is a rocket ship compared to the 3rd gen 2.7

 

You got that right. They gave me $21K for this 2.7 and that was 4 months ago and it is still sitting on the lot.

I have a 06 2.7L four banger with a 5spd manual.

You could not get me to trade it for a 6cyl.


Forgot to mention there is also another 800 pounds of concrete under those green fence panels and posts.

No problems on the highway. Big hill or need to pass, down shift to fourth...downshift is exactly what a v6 automatic would do when you push that pedal down.

Haha we are even more similar again then, I also have a dog platform, although mine is full length. Same here, the title is the best feature in any vehicle.

 

^ I love this post. It's interesting how the single cab Tacoma has completely died off and nobody has said a thing about it. More may be better, but getting rid of the lesser offerings is definitely a bad idea. Someone please post a link if there's a thread about the single cab no longer being available (3rd gen).

Yup people think there is no compromise, this maybe part of the sense of entitlement we see everywhere nowadays. There is no "one vehicle that does everything," the basic laws of nature prevent this. Good acceleration, good towing/hauling capacity, good off-roading ability, good road handling manners, and good fuel economy? NOT GONNA HAPPEN

I currently ride 400 and 500cc dirt bikes, because I'm a big person and the smaller bikes just don't fit me. One of the best dirt bikes I ever owned was a ragged out 1988 XR250. God only knows how many miles that thing had, but it just kept running strong no matter how hard I banged on it. Super fun to toss around and abuse... and all it asked for was basic maintenance.

Manufacturers produce what the market demands, so be sure to thank the BRO community for the ridiculous tanks we see at the dealerships (and the billboard-like badging). Sad there is so much demand for these monstrous things, mostly used for mall crawling and grocery getting. And waking up the neighborhood at 1:00 AM thank you very much.
