I can’t believe this worked... seriously. I am in absolute disbelief.

Registering a vehicle with a missing title in the great State of Vermont absolutely does produce results. I can now drive the truck on public roads and have it insured, obtaining the plates was the first step in getting a title for the truck.

Next I wait for the Vermont registration to arrive. Once I have the registration in hand (which acts as the title in the state of Vermont), I now have a document proving legitimate ownership and can bring it to the California DMV and transfer the vehicle into the state.

Once I do this, they’ll exchange my Vermont plates for California ones, and most importantly: issue a clean California title in my name.

That my friends is how you do it.

It’s relatively easy - watch this video.

I bought it with no title, “parts only” according to the Craigslist ad. Mind you this truck was in perfect working order, no issues besides being worn out.

Story goes the guy I bought it from was selling it for his cousin who bought it and never transferred it to his name because he lost the title. He drove it until the tags ran out.

The story lines up with the ticket I found in the glovebox for driving with expired tags, so that was all correct. Luckily the original lessee was listed on the parking ticket.

I looked up the address under the lessee on street view, and I see the truck parked in front of his house in 2014.

But unfortunately the last registered owner fell off the face of the planet. I couldn’t find him so I had to try something else to get it registered.

This method worked excellently. Once I get the Vermont registration in that’s the golden ticket I need to get a clean California title issued in my name.

CarFax showed a clean title, and my friend who is the police chief in the neighboring city confirmed it wasn’t stolen according to the CHP database.

nope. Probably going down a size to a 255/75 next set. Don't really need 33s on Igor and i can get load range Cs in that size. Either that or 275/70.

i throw a small pry bar in the rotor vanes and use the caliper to brace the hub for loosening or tightening.

Oh the whole truck is getting torn down to the engine block and frame and getting restored. I was just waiting to get the truck legal before I put money into it.

My buddy boxed my spindles for me after I broke 2 within a year. Custom box built off Tc gussets to help reinforce the upper ring which i kept breaking.

No way in hell I can keep it long enough to drive it 60,000 miles. Do you know how much insurance costs monthly at my age? It’s ridiculous.

My PreRunner only has 95k on it. I only drive about 10k miles a year.

Sorry if I’m late to the party...but obv to make it easy take off eh 4 lca bolts to swing the spindle out of the way. When you put them in, fucking hand set and tighten first. Hitting it with an impact unless you’re totally sure it’s set right will end in a world of oh fucks. On that note, I bought an electric impact with 1150 ft lbs of breaking torque for this job specifically. Trying to remove an axle nut with a pry bar sucks ass. Leverage makes it spin, with an impact, even at 178 or whatever factory torque spec...5 ugga duuggas and its off.

When prying it out it can be a pain, but if you have a high angle crowbar or med length pry bar just push against the diff and one of the 3 “fins” that are in the inboard cup.

When you go to put in, be absolutely sure you have the splines lined up. If you need more force to push it in than your arms/body weight it’s not lined up. I tried to hammer/force one in(most recent cv change actually)...and it mushroomed the front face of that outer seal surface of the diff where the cv slides in. That clearance is so tight, I spent over an hour trying to figure why it wasn’t sliding in before sending a pic to @rctoy and he, being a Toyota god, noticed The outside face of the diff axle tube showed signs of impact and suggested that, and after filing down a cunt hair of metal it went right in.

After that it’s a quick reassembly.

Im now reminiscing on the sound a cv axle makes when you gave it a bit too many beans. That...and the sound all of the onlookers make when they HEAR the cv axle break. It’s like the truck hit you with the sickest diss, dropped the mic and waltzed out and everyone is like “OOOOOHHHHH, you got owned bitch!!”

Why restore it? I'd just get it titled and sell it to a gardener.

I just want an excuse to restore a car to be honest with you.

Plus I know these trucks pretty well, and it’s good practice for me. Lots of body work to do and I get to practice rebuilding a 5VZ.
