For those of you thinking that older cars that didn't have crumple zones survived impacts better, take a gander at this.

I would much rather have my vehicle rot in a field after an accident, instead of my corpse.

That's a terrible fate for that BelAir, she looked in pretty good condition.

WOW! Those pics really show a crazy change in the shape of the truck.

I would say that from an insurance point of view, its a goner. If you somehow did that to your own truck (obviously not the case here) and had to deal with it on your own dime, the frame damage is most likely limited to the very rear-most section of the frame, BEHIND the rear-axle's rear mounts. This section is somewhat sacrificial and bends DOWNWARD when impacted, causing that exact effect.

Of course this is no guarantee that there isn't damage elsewhere, just that this is definitely where the bulk of the damage occurred, and POSSIBLY there may be no further damage.

So if I had to deal with this on my own dime, I'd cut off and replace the rear segment of the frame.

How come so few people that start these threads ever come back and state the outcome? It's like watching a 3 hour movie and missing the last 5 minutes!

It's not rebuildable. What is your concern, that since it's a 3 car accident the at fault driver will not have enough insurance coverage to cover the loss?

I'm an adjuster, in that wreck, based on pics, probably the at fault driver has state min insurance, you will probably end up filing a claim on your insurance :(

Regardless, the main thing is that you are ok :)

I wonder if it buckled like that was compounded due to the OP having the hitch in the receiver. I have read that keeping your hitch in the receiver will more than likely cause your frame to bend like that in the event of a rear end even at low speeds. Basically gives a downward leverage on the frame. 50+ mph is pretty fast to take a hit with no brakes though, I just wonder if the bed and frame would have bent like they did had she not had a hitch in the receiver.

I was rear ended by a lady who hit me doing about 35-40 no brakes, and only damage I took was the rear bumper was bent all to hell on the outer ends, the trailer plug was snapped off and a couple scratches, I did not have the hitch in the receiver, but had a D Ring attachment in the receiver that set pretty flush against the receiver. I got a new plate bumper out of the deal though so I had that going for me.

I was just rear ended by a lady on her phone last week. These threads are a good place to find information concerning similar damage and the outcome for guys that are stuck wondering what the insurance companies are going to do. Final outcome of an accident posted on here helps other owners know what to expect.

I was rear ended on the freeway and got my truck rebuilt by a great shop. I basically got a new truck out of it, with the new frame and all. I understand every situation isn't the same, but from the looks of it, I see a total loss. Get checked out by an actual MD, not those quack chiropractors. Don't hesitate to lawyer up either. Insurance companies are not your friend.

Click on her name and you'll see that she bailed after her 4th post, 2 years ago.

I agree about wanting to know answers.

Maybe she took everyone's advice and went to a Dr to get checked out. Found a rich single one and is living happily ever after in the S Pacific somewhere.
