This is where most of my driving takes place. Less than 15% of my overall driving is on the highway. Once you get the tranny trained to shift right then suburban driving (35-45mph) is great for mileage, assuming you can avoid too many stops. I've mapped out my drive to/from work (different path each way) to routes where the lights are timed. I drive 22 miles each way and slow down/stop an average of 6-8 times per trip.

Ah, I see now that you have the 4cyl 5 lugger. That makes sense then.

I just bought a 2010 4x4 4cyl access cab and my first two fill-ups have seen an average of about 24mpg. I'll be really happy if I start seeing numbers like yours.

Same here. 2010 with 2k miles. I guess there is hope, but I've been a little disappointed with the MPG's so far ..
    I'm averaging 17 right now.

I think a few more of us would like to have the 2.7L but it doesn't come in the Double Cab

I'm one who would have a double cab 4 cylinder if they offered it. I had to settle for the access cab. I also don't like that they don't offer a prerunner with a 6spd. 4x4 only.

A DC with the 4cyl would be so incredibly anemic the gas mileage gains would be negligible.

The extra weight of the double cab would offset the MPG's, a 4 banger pushing a double cab would probably get worse milage than the V6. I have an '05 double cab 4x4 and I got 400 miles out of a tank = 22mpg's when my tires were bald as hell and all highway, I put on AT's and haven't seen over 19 since :(

I managed to get 20.3mpg the other day on my access cab V6 4x4 6spd. i think its because it was raining for 2 days and everyone was driving sofaking slow on the highway. I could probably pull 21/22mpg if i was driving 50 on the highway non-stop. But that's torture, I average 19 with the bed cover and like 17.5 w/out it. Didn't think it would make that much of a difference

we'll see. You know they offered the 4cyl in the new 2010 4runner? That seems even heavier. I wish they would offer the 4cyl diesel that the hilux gets in mexico and australia.

I do believe your right. Toyota must do something if it is going to meet the new cafe requirements Obama just signed into law.....and the trucks are one area that will have to change the most...

That to me would be perfect. Not wanting to start another auto vs stick debate, but my ideal truck would be a 2.7, 6 speed auto, 4X4 with ATRAC.

My last tank came in at 20.88, which is actually the best mileage I've had on a tank since last summer. Oddly enough, the first 80 miles on the tank was carrying a bed full of firewood, loaded down to the point where the front end was feeling light. Maybe I should always drive around with the back loaded down? ;)

I'd been struggling hard just to reach the 20 mark. To be honest, I was starting to wonder if I'd ever see better than 20 again.

    lol.

just to add some perspective, my dads 2000 chevy silverado with 285hp 5.3 gets 20mpg @ 85 mph all day long and its a full size extended cab truck often with a load in it...

Try the AC mod to increase MPG

It makes it so the AC compressor runs only when you push on the AC button. Otherwise, your compressor is running anytime you have your defrost on - that includes the option for feet and defrost.
